Races in this period were heavily nationalistic affairs, with a few countries setting up races of their own, but no formal championship tying them together.
The rules varied from country to country and race to race, and typically centered around maximum (not minimum) weights in an effort to limit power by limiting engine size indirectly (10–15 liter engines were quite common, usually with no more than four cylinders, and producing less than 50hp).
The races that formed the first Constructors Championship were the Indianapolis 500, the European Grand Prix, and the French and Italian Grands Prix.

It took until the final race of the weekend, but as Rob and the West Surrey racing team left the Scottish circuit there was jubilation all round.
Races one and two on Sunday were relatively uneventful for Rob.
The VX Racing driver put Rob under pressure for several laps and once Matt Neal passed Muller for second, it was the championship leader who began to close on Rob, but a nine second lead was more than sufficient to ensure there was no chance of letting that first win slip.

A third leading British motor racing organisation is seeking to join the Australian supercar V8 series in a move which would further lift the standard of the two-make championship.
West Surrey Racing was founded in 1981 and over the next decade was a major force in British formula three racing, helping to launch the formula one careers of drivers including Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen, Eddie Irvine and Rubens Barrichello and claiming five championships along the way.
The way was paved initially, though, when Tom Walkinshaw Racing ran the Holden Racing Team, a relationship which ended last year when TWR was in financial trouble and Holden bought the team, then sold it to its lead driver, Mark Skaife.

This meant he joined the race from the pit lane one lap behind the leaders and finished 11th.
