WVUSOD "Classified Employee Handbook" discusses gross misconduct and states this "misconduct is of substantial actual and/or potential consequence to operation or persons, typically involving flagrant or willful violation of policy, law, or standards of performance or conduct.

Soon after Dr. Sanford Fenton was named a department chair at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 1987, he received an expected phone call from his mentor, Dr. Robert Rapp.
He was a pioneer in education for pediatric dentistry, or pedodontics, a specialty that was formally recognized just a few years before he joined the Pitt school, said Dr. Deborah Studen-Pavlovich, a former student and current chair of pediatric dentistry at Pitt.
His emphasis on critical thinking, objective methods for measuring accomplishments and his organized approach to literature reviews are among the innovations that have had a lasting impact, both at the Pitt school and at dental schools around the world, said Dr. Dennis Ranalli, another former student who is associate dean of the Pitt dental school.
