WARWICK-When the school budget proposal was defeated by voters on May 17, the Warwick School Board of Education was faced with two options, as stated by New York State Education law.
The law states that a school budget may only be submitted to the voters twice, with a public hearing held before the second vote.
To the average Warwick homeowner with a house assessed at $40,000, the difference in taxes between what he/she would pay with the full school budget in place and what he/she would pay under a contingency budget is about $108 per year or $9 per month.

WEST WARWICK -- Though relatively far from the Rhode Island coast, the modest cafeteria at Deering Middle School offers impressive vistas, particularly on stormy nights when trees and plants on the 10-acre hilltop campus sway violently in the breeze.
School officials hope that same wind will one day push a turbine that could generate enough inexpensive electricity to power Deering, West Warwick High School and the adjacent town-owned Civic Center and ice rink."It's something we ought to look into," Supt. David P. Raiche said recently.
The project, which would be a first among Rhode Island school districts, is not without precedent in a state with aging schoolhouses that incorporate little energy-saving technology.
