		Westfriesland is de naam van een gebied in Noord-Holland dat zich uitstrekt van Enkhuizen tot Alkmaar en van Hoorn tot Schagen: het gebied dat wordt omsloten door de Westfriese Omringdijk.
		Vanaf de elfde eeuw deden opeenvolgende Hollandse graven vergeefse pogingen de Westfriezen onder hun gezag te brengen; pas Floris V slaagde daarin in 1287 en liet vijf dwangburchten bouwen om dit te bevestigen.
		Westfriesland werd sedertdien een van de belangrijkste landbouwgebieden van het graafschap Holland.
