Its IATA Airport Code is derived from its location in White Plains, although by some accounts the code is taken from the neighboring communities of Harrison, Purchase, and North Castle.
The airport was originally constructed for military purposes, home to an Air National Guard unit, but today is used for general aviation and commercial service, which began in 1947.
The airport was the point of departure for the last flight of Independence Air; a flight to Washington, DC at 7:26pm on Thursday, January 5, 2006.
