The Westerkerk is a church in Amsterdam, finished in 1638 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser.
It is located close to "The Achterhuis" where diarist Anne Frank, her family and others hid from Nazi persecution for two years during World War II.
The Westerkerk is mentioned frequently in her diary - its clock tower could be seen from the attic of "The Achterhuis" and Frank described the chiming of the clock as a source of comfort.

The decision to build this church, as well as the smaller Noorderkerk, was taken in 1620, as a result of the urban expansion of Amsterdam and the need for churches for the new inhabitants.

A prolific Dutch specialist of the newly developed theme of townscape, van der Heyden was in his day better known as an inventor: he organised municipal street lighting in Amsterdam and patented the first fire engine equipped with pumpdriven hoses.

An additional point of interest for the modern viewer is that Rembrandt was buried in the Westerkerk in 1669.

In April, the tower of the Westerkerk was open to visitors, and my friends and I climbed the steep steps to the top tower.
The Westerkerk guided my friends and I home every night as we walked through the Amsterdam streets, and permanently engrained in my memory is the golden lights of the Westerkerk against the purple-blue Amsterdam night sky.
For me, the Westerkerk will always be a symbol of home...
