Poland's betrayal by the Western Allies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Poland's betrayal by the Western Allies refers to the feelings of Polish public opinion at the end of WW2.
In Western Europe the start of the Second World War is usually dated from the German invastion of Poland, 1 September 1939.
Some view it as a 'betrayal' of Poland by the Western allies (which can be seen as part of a larger 'betrayal' to allow it to fall entirely into the Soviet sphere of influence anyway).

Poland's betrayal by the Western Allies
Poland's betrayal by the Western Allies refers to the resentment felt by some in Poland at the end of World War II towards the Western Allies.
The controversy, and reason for resentment, surrounds the fact that despite their agreement the Western Allies did not respond with a "ground intervention." Britain mobilized, and France began the process of mobilizaton on 3 September, but there was little in the way of a ground offensive.
In this case, although the Soviet army, Polands "allies' ally" was, at times, only a few hundred meters away very limited support was available with most of it coming from RAF flights from distant Italy.

Western Allies - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The Western Allies were the democracies and their colonial peoples, within the broader coalition of Allies during World War II.
The term is generally understood to refer to the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations (from 1939), exiled forces from Occupied Europe (from 1940), the United States (from 1941), and a few other countries.
From 1942 onwards, the entire military forces of the Western Allies were overseen by the U.S.-British Combined Chiefs of Staff, based in Washington D. This military article is a stub.

Allied or Soviet Victory in Europe?
While the defeats inflicted on Germany by the USSR and the western Allies (the USA, UK and a variety of minor powers) were painfully unequal in scale, this is in the final analysis an unreasonable comparison.
Having given the western Allies their due, it should be recognized that the Soviet contribution to the war against Nazi Germany was absolutely necessary to an allied victory in Europe.
By the time of the victory in Europe the western Allies were substantially more powerful than the Soviet Union and so they reaped the profits of World War II which many Soviets would say were paid for with Soviet blood.

A second problem that the Western Allies have is that the largest part of their industrial capacity can't be put to use immediately.
The war with Japan will come and the Western Allies player has to prepare for this by building aircraft carriers as well as other units for the war in the Pacific, but they will also have to build up forces for their participation in the war in Europe.
Initial priorities for the Western Allies should be to expand their industrial base (this advice holds true for virtually every power in the game) and maintain their supply pool.

 Rome: The Punic Wars
Roman allies in the south of Italy literally ran to Hannibal's side; the whole of Sicily allied itself with the Carthaginians.
Their system of alliances had held firm; while Hannibal had depended on the allies running to his side, only the most remote Roman allies, those in the south and Siciliy, left the Roman alliance.
Because Philip V of Macedon had allied himself with Hannibal and started his own war of conquest, the second Punic War forced Rome to turn east in wars of conquest against first Philip and then other Hellenistic kingdoms.

"What the Western allies supplied was a kind of economic backup to the Soviet Union, which made possible their extraordinary military success, and the extraordinary success of their armaments industry, and this is something which [Soviet leader Josef] Stalin privately admitted during the war as well," Overy said.
In the absence of a second front on the ground in West Europe, as demanded by Stalin, the Western allies saw their campaign of saturation bombing of German industrial installations and cities as an important way of helping Moscow.

President Bush Discusses Freedom in Iraq and Middle East
Seventy-four years ago, The Sunday London Times declared nine-tenths of the population of India to be "illiterates not caring a fig for politics." Yet when Indian democracy was imperiled in the 1970s, the Indian people showed their commitment to liberty in a national referendum that saved their form of government.
As we watch and encourage reforms in the region, we are mindful that modernization is not the same as Westernization.
Sixty years of Western nations excusing and accommodating the lack of freedom in the Middle East did nothing to make us safe -- because in the long run, stability cannot be purchased at the expense of liberty.

Perhaps, but remember that the Allies had hundreds of thousands of captured Germans which would be a source of trained professional manpower which could be tapped to help contain and then starve out the very flower of Soviet manhood.
Most of the German PoWs captured by the Western Allies were not as highly trained as the men who had served either on the Ostfront or earlier on in the war.
The quality of the German Wehrmacht that faced the Western Allies was someway down on the quality in 1941 or 1942, and even then, most of the best units were assigned to the East.

With the fear that Berliners had of the advancing Soviet forces, the Western Allies could have used this information to good effect by appearing as "protectors" to the population(although this may have caused political problems later).
