The Bulldogs shuffled their defenders around on the Saints' talls several times, but Gehrig, who kicked eight goals, and Riewoldt, who kicked five, were too strong and talented for any of them, taking marks with imperious ease at times.
The Bulldogs kicked three of the last four goals of the third quarter, and the first of the last term, to sneak back within 28 points, to give a faint hope they could mount a comeback similar to last weekend's stunning recovery against Adelaide at the MCG.
Bulldogs skipper Brad Johnson finished with six goals in an excellent performance, including three in the first quarter, while Chris Grant was also good up forward and Cross the Bulldogs' best midfielder.

A fortnight later in the preliminary final Geelong proved to have the Bulldogs' measure but, to borrow the parlance of a later era, 'the finals monkey was now off their back', and 1954 would see it well and truly buried.
The Bulldogs finished 6th in 1957, largely as a result of the solid start to the season they had enjoyed under Sutton, but 1958 brought a nosedive into oblivion, with just 3 wins for the year earning the side its first ever VFL wooden spoon.
Midway through a 1961 season in which the Bulldogs had taken their much maligned skill to a new level of efficiency, the constant, high profile criticism of coaches like Norm Smith of Melbourne led to a much more rigorous interpretation of the handball laws by VFL umpires (see footnote 25).

 West. Bulldogs
Certainly, it is hard to imagine the Bulldogs matching it with either Geelong's 1951-52 premiership side, or the redoubtable Melbourne combination of the late 1950s which won 5 flags from 6 consecutive grand final starts.
However, an objective examination of the facts appears to make it clear that such a demarcation is both convenient and contrived; as with many football clubs originating during the 19th century, identifying a discrete and unambiguous starting point is notoriously difficult.
In opting for the name 'Western Bulldogs' the club demonstrated an interesting - some would say disturbing - refusal to accept that the days of the AFL as a suburban Melbourne competition were over.

Western Bulldogs to chew over heavy AFL loss
The Bulldogs’ poorest financial performance in five years was attributed to crowds of around just 19,000, the lowest of any Victorian club, a fall in corporate support and a clash with Colonial stadium over a disputed amount of $203,000 (B227,000) in match returns.
Smorgon said Colonial’s interpretation of match returns was significantly different to its first-year distribution and “given the severity of the impact and the size of the claim, we may have to resort to legal action”.
Whilst the Bulldogs expect to appoint a chief executive next week, the actual result will not be known until next month.

Of that 40,000 the break up I reckon would be 32,000 of them supporting Collingwood, 5,000 supporting the Western Bulldogs and the other 3,000 would have been neutrals, (AFL or MCC members) who didn’t care who won.
What I do care about though is if we were Footscray and not Western Bulldogs or just ‘The Bulldogs’ as is the case when the Western is dropped, this most unfortunate connection between them and us would not be eventuate.
