Western Digital's Caviar SE16 hard drive - The Tech Report - Page 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Western Digital's Caviar SE16 is the latest hard drive to jump on the 300MB/s bandwagon, and fortunately, this Caviar is sporting more than just support for a faster Serial ATA interface.
According to Western Digital, the SE16 is simply an 80GB platter drive with a new logic board.
Western Digital has gone with an all-fl motif for the Caviar SE16, which really only involves coloring a normally bare metal plate on the drive.

Western Digital's Caviar RE2 hard drive - The Tech Report - Page 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
The newest Raptor is over a year and a half old, so it's better to compare the Caviar RE2's specs with Western Digital's most recent desktop offering, the Caviar SE16.
Western Digital's Raptor WD740GD has supported Tagged Command Queuing (TCQ) from the beginning, but storage controllers with TCQ support are rarer than those that work with NCQ.
We should note that when Western Digital launched the Caviar SE16, which lacks NCQ support, the company claimed that command queuing could actually hurt performance with the kinds of streaming transfers that are typical in desktop systems.

Western Digital leapfrogged the ATA hard drive market with the release of the Caviar WD400BB, the first drive to feature an unheard of aerial density of 20GB/platter.

For this drive, Western Digital chose to stick to the 3-platter design of the Caviar WD1000BB, yielding a flagship capacity of 120GB.

Decision at 250 GB: Maxtor MaXLine Plus II vs. Western Digital WD2500JB | Tom's Hardware
With regard to the latter, hard drive manufacturers haven't exactly gained any good publicity lately, due to the fact that the warranties on the mainstream models were suddenly reduced to one year last fall.
Maxtor makes up for this with its MaXLine series; Western Digital, in order to avoid a similarly awkward situation, had never reduced the three-year warranties on its "Special Edition" models (8 MB buffer) to begin with.
With the two 250 GB monsters, it has once more become a neck-and-neck race.
