Baker Hughes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 2000, Baker Hughes and Schlumberger formed a joint venture called Western Geco.
Western Geco was formed by the merger of Baker Hughes's Western Geophysical and Schlumberger's Geco-Prakla which were the two leading seismic interpretation companies.
In 2006, Baker Hughes announced in a press release that it was selling its 30% share of the Western Geco joint venture to Schlumberger for $2.4 billion in cash.

“Western Legend” will be capable of towing four 6 kilometer long streamers with a maximum length of two 10,000m arrays and be equipped to carry out two- and three-dimensional imaging of the ocean floor and the Earth’s deep interior.
When operating as an academic research vessel, the “Western Legend” will be owned by The National Science Foundation, operated by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and under the advisement of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), an organization of 62 academic institutions and National Laboratories involved in oceanographic research.
The receiving systems used by “Western Legend” to record the sounds that probe the Earth's interior are substantially more sophisticated than that onboard R/V “Maurice Ewing”.

Exclusive: Oil giant buys Linux supercomputer - Printer friendly - ZDNet UK News
Western GeCo, the UK-based oil industry services giant recently formed from the merger of Schlumberger's Geco-Prakla and Baker Hughes' Western Geophysical, is to adopt a Linux-based supercomputer cluster for operations like ocean floor surveys, ZDNet UK has learned.
The Western GeCo installation will be comparable in scope to a 1,024-node Linux cluster recently bought by Shell and a mainframe system installed by Danish ISP Telia that runs Linux in a virtual machine.
It is also important that the Western GeCo cluster will be running mission-critical applications, such as mapping the ocean floor in real time based on satellite information from ocean-going vessels.

That means Western Geco's choice of technology in the future is likely to impact competitors for survey work as well as suppliers of equipment and services.
Industry observers also point out that it is not a foregone conclusion that the new Western Geco enterprise, which has been set up as an independent company and may well be floated in due course, will necessarily opt for Schlumberger's marine seismic design and technology.
In this context Q-Marine may prove to have a pivotal role in persuading the management of Western Geco that the Schlumberger route has the edge over the competition in the coming market for 4D time-lapse studies.

This is no more than you would expect given that Schlumberger is to be the senior partner in Western Geco with 70% to Baker Hughes' 30%, and that Geco-Prakla brings to the table the largest fleet worldwide.
Equally, Western Geco may conclude that only a light weeding is required amongst its fleet, assuming most of the 'clunkers' have already been discarded.
This is something of a coup for Sercel and an undeniable blow to TMS and by implication Western which recently let go of its exclusive licence to the Sentry solid streamer.
