We drove around the zoo, thinking that would be faster, but in retrospect walking would have been just as fast - if you want to see all the exhibits, you'll be covering that distance anyway.
Another highlight was the wombat: Camilla hadn't seen a (live) one before even in a zoo, and this one was very tame, running around outside at midday and jumping up to the top of the fence so we could pat it.
Western Plains Zoo is run by the NSW Zoological Parks Board, along with Sydney's Taronga Zoo.

Personally I think riding a bicycle round the zoo would be an ideal way to see the animals from Africa such as big cats, elephants, Hippopotamuses and a large number of Australian native species (as well as animals from 3 other continents).
With conservation as a central focus of the zoo I think your overall educational experience will be enhanced as opposed to just seeing a few animals in your run of the mill city zoo.
I have been to Dubbo, I went in 2004 with my family,(I am 11 years old) we went to the western plains zoo, it was a really great experience, i think this website is a great insight into Dubbo and the Western Plains Zoo.

Dubbo is a town in Central Western NSW that quite possibly has lots of attractions but I confess I've mostly only ever been there to see the zoo.
Once you're at Western Plains Zoo, you'll probably want to have more or less a full day there, or at least several hours.
Instead of the animals being in cages as in most zoos, they're in open fields which are separated from the (tasty) public by moats and grassy mounds.
