Kenyan health authorities say they have contained an outbreak of typhoid fever in the western part of the country.
Provincial medical officer Olango Onudi says 174 people have been admitted to hospitals in Kenya's Western Province with typhoid symptoms within the past month, and five have died from the disease.
Onudi says health authorities are containing the outbreak by treating water sources with chlorine, providing free chlorine tablets to households, urging people to use latrines, and monitoring the chlorine level in the water on a daily basis.

In November of 1999, Dr. Laura L. Stachowski (Cultural Projects director) traveled to Kenya to visit prospective schools, meet school administrators, and establish procedures for the placement of US educators (both pre-service and in-service) in Kenyan elementary and secondary schools.
Kenya joins a well-established program, the Cultural Immersion Projects, through which thousands of educators have enjoyed rewarding professional experiences in the schools and communities of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, India, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as the Navajo Indian Reservations of the US Southwest.

The same week five Indiana University students headed overseas to western Kenya, the cover article in The Economist magazine dismissed the African continent as “hopeless.” Citing examples of civil wars and corruption, mismanagement and bad governance, epidemics and famines, the author provided a bleak portrayal of the continent.
While the Western press highlights the dismal failures and corruption of the leaders and the elites in the African countries, they are overlooking the resilience of the people at the grass-roots level.
Throughout the Western Province of Kenya, these women’s groups, which receive no outside assistance, surviving only on what each woman contributes or what they gain from their collective small-business or farms, are introducing sustainable development projects in their communities.

While leaders met in South Africa in July to discuss Africa’s worsening AIDS epidemic, a group of IU Bloomington students and alumni did their part to help slow the spread of the deadly disease.
For the third consecutive summer, members of the IU student group Outreach Kenya Development Volunteers (OKVD) traveled to Kenya to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of AIDS.
