Observations to Clarify the Status of the Reef Heron, Little Green Heron and Clamorous Reed Warbler on Abu Dhabi Island ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Reef Heron, as already mentioned, is classed in the UAE as a resident breeder.
Reef Herons can be seen all around the coast of Abu Dhabi Island but sightings indicate that the larger concentrations are in the tidal creeks and mud flats to the north of the island.
Reef Herons generally nest in colonies but are also known to do so in isolation, as evidenced by these observations.

There has been a total of about 60 records of Western Reef Heron in Italy and France but, oddly, there are very few records in Greece (or indeed anywhere in the eastern Mediterranean away from southern Israel) and equally few from Spain and Morocco, so it is a decidedly erratic vagrant.
Most recently, two Western Reef Herons were found in different breeding colonies of Little Egrets in France in 1996, and at least one of them reared two hybrid young (Ornithos 4:143).
As for the origins of Western Reef Herons in Europe, it is worth bearing in mind that over 500 (apparantly of the eastern form schistacea) were imported into Germany between 1980 and 1982 (A. van den Berg pers comm.) and at least 18 of them were released.

The Western Reef Heron, Egretta gularis, is a medium-sized (Gray or white wading bird with long neck and long legs and (usually) long bill) heron.
The white morph is similar in general appearance to the (Old World egret) Little Egret, but has a thicker bill, duller legs, and a less elegant appearance.
The grey morph is unlikely to be confused with any other species within the range of this (Any of various usually white herons having long plumes during breeding season) egret.

This time it was the turn of a Western Reef Heron which stunned bird expert John Graham by turning up unexpectedly at Buffels Bay in the Cape Point section of the Cape Peninsula National Park at the weekend.
The heron is usually found on the west coast off Africa, from as far north as Mauritania to as far south as Gabon.
Graham said he had seen the Western Reef Heron while doing his customary scan through bird roosts on the shore line at Buffels Bay, after spending some time watching vast numbers of pelagic (offshore) birds passing close by.

A coral is a colony of many individual coral animals called polyps that are derived from replication of an original polyp.
A coral reef is made of “squillions” of coral colonies plus other limestone depositing organisms, growing on and among the skeletons of their predecessors, and the sands and silts derived from them.
On the Great Barrier Reef, depending on where it grows, a reef can be either a ribbon reef (on the continental shelf edge), a platform reef (on the shelf), or a fringing reef (along the continental islands and mainland).
