GH-WP The Western Region of Ghana includes the large cities of Sekondi and Takoradi on the coast, coastal Axim and a hilly inland area including Elubo, that reaches from the Côte d'Ivoire border in the west, to the Central Region in the east.
The founder of modern independent Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah was born (and later temporarily buried) in the village of Nkroful, west of Axim where he once taught school in the 1930's.
The largest rivers are the Ankobra River, The Bia River, the Pra River in the east and the Tano River partly forming the western national border.

Farmers in the Ashanti, Western and Eastern regions who spoke to this writer also raised a storm of protest explaining that deforestation in their villages is already drying up the soils and denying their crops of the much needed shade they needed to blossom and they cannot afford to lose the forest reserves.

Villages in the Wassa West District of Ghana's western region have been hit by the spillage of thousands of cubic metres of mine wastewater contaminated with cyanide and heavy metals.
The officer in charge of the EPA in the Western Region, Irene Heathcote, said, "The incident had indeed happened." When pressed to comment on the issue, she simply said, "Please call my boss in Accra." The acting head of Ghana's EPA could not be reached for comment.
An official of the Ghana Chamber of Mines who spoke on condition of anonymity said, "Incidents such as the cyanide spillage, of course, are completely unacceptable to the community and to the mining industry.

Residents of Dumasi and surrounding villages in Ghana's western region are demanding a total audit of all operations of the Canadian-owned mining company Bogosu Gold Ltd. The gold mines are located 200 kilometers (120 miles) west of the capital, Accra.
This was corroborated by Andoh of the Ghana EPA, who attributed the dark blue coloration of to the high iron content in the water in the boreholes.
