 EPA - Western United States Landscape Characterization
The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) is proposing an ambitious agenda to assess the status of aquatic resources in a 12-State area of the western United States by 2003.
Five research and development activities are critical to the completion of this unprecedented landscape assessment: (1) acquisition and assembly of landscape databases, (2) developing new remote sensing approaches to detect watershed-scale stressors, (3) identifying and developing landscape indicators, (4) quantifying relationships between aquatic resource conditions and landscape indicators, and (5) developing and implementing assessment methodologies.
Initial landscape assessment efforts for the U.S. EPA Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program’s Western Pilot focused on improving and testing landscape indicators previously developed for the mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

 Development of New Crops in the Western United States
There are 5.4 million ha of wheat grown in the western states each year, indicating that nearly one of four cultivated ha is dedicated to the production of an agricultural commodity that is in surplus and supported by federal programs.
A telephone survey was conducted in June and July of 1991 to profile 22 new crops research programs in the western states (Table 3).
When asked to define those factors which most directly limited the development of new crops in the western states, several were identified (Table 4).

In a 1997 national study of family owned businesses, 1,116 households were asked to take part in a survey From all 50 states and parts of Canada, family households in which one or more members owned or managed a business were selected at random to complete a two-phase telephone interview.
Eligible business owners or managers (a) had worked in the business at least 6 hours per week year round or a minimum of 312 hours in the previous year, (b) were involved in the day-to-day management of the business, and (c) had been in business for at least one year.

Clear skies over most of the western United States on the afternoon of September 6, 2006, revealed numerous large fires burning in several states.
Numerous fires were burning in the mountains of north-central Washington, including the Tripod Complex Fire, which had grown to nearly 165,000 acres, according to the September 7 report from the National Interagency Fire Center.
In the state’s southeastern corner, another large fire, the Columbia Complex, had grown to just over 96,000 acres.

A cluster of Pacific storms caused heavy rainfall across most of the western United States on Friday, knocked out power across wide areas and caused widespread flooding.
