The true loyal citizenship is a critical loyalty that means to refuse to have to permanently prove one's belonging to the society in full knowledge of one's responsibilities as citizen, lay claim to one's rights, and carry out a thorough critique of government policies when these policies betray the ideals of a democratic society.
Confident in convictions, frank and rigorous in their critical outlook, armed with a broader understanding of Western societies, of their values, their history and their aspirations, they are ideally placed to engage their fellow citizens in reconciling these societies with their own ideals.
These societies have changed, and the teaching of history must change apace: It must include the multiplicity of these experiences; it must even speak of the dark periods of history, those of which new citizens of the West have often been the original victims.

The diffusion of Western culture throughout much of the contemporary world and its subsequent retreat should be understood as being caused by the change in the relative power of the West.
Thus an examination of similarities and dissimilarities between Western and non-Western cultures is indispensable for the study of non-Western societies' responses to Western cultures.

 Crimes of Honor and Shame
In contrast to traditional societies where the type of patriarchy is what Scharabi (1988) calls neo-patriarchy, the responsibility of control in modern Western countries shifts from male members of a woman's biological family to her male intimate partner.
In fact, it is the combination of individualism, patriarchal societies and the privacy of the home, that Western feminists and those involved with the study of domestic violence have long argued kept the extent of such violence hidden in modern Western societies.
Within Western societies with the emphasis on individualism and privacy, the shame referent may rest only in a learned memory or belief system that males are dominant and females are submissive and must be controlled.

White Anglo-Saxons may (however improbably) trace their "Western origins" back to the Ancient Greeks -- who actually belonged to a Mediterranean civilisational bloc, which was even then in close and constant contact with other civilisational blocs in east Africa and south and east Asia.
Define "Western." It is not race, God forbid, though there are still a great many people in "Western societies" -- not least in Mr Berlusconi's government -- who would argue otherwise.
But here is the rub: Western values, it is widely accepted by almost everybody (including both Berlusconi and Bin Laden), entail such things as democracy and human rights, the emancipation and equality of women, secularism, reason and tolerance.

It is also a failure of society to reject and condemn the brutalization and intimidation of women at the hands of family members.
In societies where women’s rights are weak, their vulnerability to violence is compounded by a lack of options to seek protection from the law.
And in societies where gender and family relations are derived from religious law, if jurists interpret and apply the law to sanction violence for specific purposes or under certain circumstances, demands for protections and greater rights for women can be condemned as heresy or apostasy.
