		Westham is a small hamlet built on the west side of Pevensey castle walls, and its history is tied in with the Castle.
		The castle was besieged, probably from the Westham side, as a narrow spit of land joined the castle to the mainland, by William Rufus(1087 - 1100) and King Stephen(1135 - 1141).
		To the east are the deserted areas of the Pevensey Levels, where smugglers would bring in their cargoes, when the area was under water.

		Another vicar of Westham is said to have tried in vain to keep Charles II on the path of morality.

		As to Westham, for one brief day it was a town in Massachusetts.
		Whether the petitioners ever had the opportunity to express their wishes for a name or ever knew the first name selected for their town is not known.
