Southland District is a territorial authority in the South Island of New Zealand.
Southland District covers the majority of the land area of Southland Region, although the region also covers Gore District, Invercargill City and adjacent territorial waters.
Two of New Zealand's largest national parks are within the boundaries of Southland District: Fiordland National Park, and Rakiura National Park (which covers most of Stewart Island/Rakiura).

The Waitaki district straddles the border of the Canterbury and Otago regions of New Zealand, the traditional border of which is the Waitaki River.
The district, which is agricultural by nature, comprises the wide alluvial fan of the river, and runs inland along the banks of the river, this forming a roughly triangular region.
Oamaru is the largest town in the district.

The West Coast is one of the administrative regions of New Zealand, located on the west coast of the South Island.
Westland was only occasionally visited by early Europeans until the discovery of gold near the Taramakau River in 1864 by two Maori, Ihaia Tainui and Haimona Taukau.
Much of the region is public land administered by the New Zealand Department of Conservation and the region has some of the best remaining stands of native forest, along with a wealth of rare wildlife.

ACT Local Government spokesman Owen Jennings has congratulated the Westland District Council for its decision to waive resource consent and building fees for a trial period in a bid to encourage growth in the region.
He said it was a “crying shame” the Westland District Council had to take a “pitiful handout” from the Government’s $120 million West Coast accord economic package to off-set the cost of its trial scheme to waive resort consent and building fees.
