The Westland Wasp was a general purpose helicopter, basically a derivative of the British Army Scout helicopter, with the requirement of being small enough to land on Royal Navy frigates.
On August 9, 1959 Westland acquired Saunders-Roe and the two programs were combined into the “Scout/Wasp” program with the “Scout” being able to seat five with a skid undercarriage and the “Wasp” seating four with a quadricycle undercarriage and folding elements (tail and main rotors) to enable shipboard stowage.
The Westland Wasp, powered by the Rolls-Royce nimbus 503 engine was developed as a light anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare helicopter carrying 2 target-seeking torpedoes for operations from small ships and was the first of a new generation of gas-turbine powered light helicopters.

The Westland Scout, Wasp, & Lynx
In fact, the Lynx is so identified as a naval helicopter that the general assumption has been that it was originally designed for naval requirements and then adopted by the army, when in fact the truth is exactly the opposite.
One Lynx dropped a homing torpedo, which continued to cruise around under the submarine, waiting for it to dive; the submarine's skipper decided not to, and returned to harbor, where the vessel was then worked over by the Lynxes with their machine guns and then disabled by Wasps firing AS-12 missiles.
The Westland 30 civil transport helicopter derivative of the Lynx had been anticipated to an extent by an earlier concept, the Westland "Model 606", which was a Lynx with a fuselage stretch to accommodate up to 13 passengers, and uprated engines to handle the greater takeoff weight.

For a number of years, Westland manufactured anglicized Sikorsky-designed helicopters under license, usually with substantial modifications, but it was not until after the amalgamation of the British helicopter industry in 1959-61 that any original projects reached the hardware stage.
One of the three helicopters included in the Aerospatiale/Westland co-production agreement of 1968, the Westland Lynx was designed initially for naval and civil roles, but early appreciation of its suitability for a wide range of military operations has led to an expanded development programme under the titles Army and Navy Lynx.

Negotiations to combine GKN Westland and Agusta into a helicopter company to rival Bell and Eurocopter are well under way and should be completed by the middle of this year, according to Agusta president and CEO Amedeo Caporaletti.
The friendly merger with GKN Westland, and the recently formed Bell Agusta Aerospace Company joint venture (exhibiting for the first time at Heli-Expo '99), are an alternative to a "savage rationalization" of the helicopter industry that would cut jobs, close factories and eliminate some capabilities, Caporaletti told Show News from Varese, Italy.

Helicopters are powered aircraft, but they can still fly without power by using the momentum in the rotors and using downward motion to force air through the rotors.
It is theoretically possible to have spiralling rotors, similar in principle to variable-pitch swept wings, which could exceed the speed of sound, but no presently known materials are light enough, strong enough, and flexible enough to construct them.
The Bristol Type 192 Belvedere (then taken on by Westland) twin rotor helicopter had a large cargo door and external hoist, and was used as personnel/paratroop transport, casualty evacuation, and for lifting large loads.
