The Westland Whirlwind was designed by W.E.W. Petter, in response to the 1935 specification F35/37.
The Whirlwind would distinguish itself as a ground attack aircraft in Europe until the arrival of the Hawker Typhoon in 1943.
June 1943 saw the replacement of the Whirlwinds in 263 squadron with the arrival of Hurricane IVs.

The Whirlwind was a helicoptor made under license by Westland as a militarised version of the Sikorsky S-55.
The final Whirlwind variant was the HAR 10, this was powered by a gas turbine engine, the Bristol Siddeley Gnome.
Whirlwinds initially covered most of the Search and Rescue requirement of the R.A.F. and provided country wide coverage by allocating a flight of two aircraft from either No.s 22 or 202 Squadrons to various stations around the British coast.

One Whirlwind was recorded with all-blue undersurfaces as late as June 22 1941, P6997 being the machine.

The large surplus of HAS7 Whirlwinds saw their use in a commando transport role from 1960 onwards with some being converted to HAR9s with a Rolls Royce Gnome turbine, entering service with SAR flights in 1967.
The subsequent RAF HAR Mk.4 version was modified for use in the tropics and fitted with a new variant of the Pratt and Whitney R-1340.
When Westland began producing the S-55, it specified that the American engine would be used until a more suitable British powerplant was available.

As a result only 114 Whirlwinds were built and only two squadrons were equipped, No. 263 and No.137, Finally the Whirlwind was relegated to a low level fighter-bomber role until it went out of service in December, 1943.
There are profiles of Whirlwind P6967 with this style, but it did not have any squadron codes.
The spinners were in Dark Earth, and the fin flash was the full height, as in the kit.

I drew the plan using factory 3-views, and the outlines are very accurate; I did narrow the width of the fuselage and the nacelles to streamline the model.
Though not a beginner’s project, the Whirlwind can be built and flown by anyone who is comfortable with a low-wing, aileron airplane.

200 Whirlwinds were ordered in early 1939 with another 200 ordered later in the year.
Production was slower than expected, possibly due to Lysander work and problems in supply of the Peregrine engines and the first Whirlwind arrived at an RAF base beginning June 1940.
Its easy to say, why not work on the Peregrine but Rolls Royce had already decided to abandon production of this and the Whirlwind and Peregrine were built around each other only whereas the Hercules was being looked at for a number of other aircraft.

The aircraft itself should represent an aircraft that was used as a fighter bomber in the Operation Starkey, against the miscaptions in most books which say that it is an aircraft used in the Dieppe raid.
As I modeled this one, I too belevied that it is from the Dieppe raid, but the facts that the Whirlwind specialist Stefan Plato gave me did change my mind.
Even when in most books is talked about a failed Operation, one of the innovations taken over from this event are the white wing markings which later became better known as invasion or D-Day stripes.

I know of the Whirlwind because last year at old warden the desighner was there with a couple of kits and a demo plane.
