The Longford Westmeath Argentina Society, formed in 1989, is a historical and cultural group, which aims to promote a greater awareness of and maintain the relationship between the descendants of Irish emigrants to Argentina, and our own community.
However, in three Irish counties - Westmeath, Longford and Wexford - there is a strong awareness of these links, since these were the counties of origin of an estimated 60 per cent of the estimated 30,000 Irish who emigrated to Argentina during the 1800s.
Two Westmeath men, William Mooney and Patrick Bookey, as well as Patrick Browne from Wexford, contacted the people in their counties of origin, and invited them to establish in Argentina.

She is sister of the late Brian Lenihan, who lived in Athlone and represented Roscommon/Leitrim in the Dáil for a number of years, and is the daughter of P.J. Lenihan, TD for Longford/Westmeath from 1965 to 1970.
A Westmeath Examiner/MRBI poll predicted that Mr Penrose would head the poll with 33 per cent of the vote, followed by Ms O'Rourke with 29 per cent, both securing election on the first count.

Ballinagore, who last won the Westmeath Junior Football championship in 1940, regained the title at Cusack Park when they had an easy victory over a depleted Shandonagh side which had to line-out without two of their regulars - Gordon Carey and Ciaran Conway.
The losers team became further depleted when youthful centre half back, Frank Conway, had to retire in the seventh minute.
