  Chester RUFC match report
Westoe in only their first interjection into Chester territory scored a simple converted try to show that they had something to offer the game 14 - 7 to Chester.
Again Chester were at it forcing their way forward and from a driving maul Meadows made a break drawing the first man and passing perfectly to the inspirational Bebbington for his second try in as many weeks to increase the score to 22 points to 7.
Westoe still alive and in the game, came back with venom and from a line out in the Chester 22, forged a clever move which saw their winger get involved with the forwards and scored out wide to reduce the Chester lead to 36 - 12.

The conveyors were the first to be installed in the United Kingdom, the Westoe installation being the second longest in the world at that time.
The rail route from Westoe to the river Tyne was through the town of South Shields negotiating two 100 m radius curves and one 300 m radius curve.

Arriving at Westoe in the rain we were told that the match would be played a couple of miles away on a school playing field.
With Westoe players holding on to his body Marcus tried to shake them off by quickly working his shoulders but incurred a penalty because the referee interpreted his movements as punching.
In particular the Westoe front row had a good game and very much so their tight head prop who gave our new lad Karl the run around until Karl was replaced by the more experienced Sam after he had hurt his knee in the first half.

Westoe scored two converted tries in the first 5 minutes of the second half, and when Dave Hockney had to retire with a back injury the game was virtually over as a contest, as Redcar had no more replacements.
Westoe scored one more unconverted try before Redcar Man of the Match, Mark Ellis, was rewarded for his hard work by a try following another quickly taken penalty after 60minutes play.

The present house was built on the river terrace in 1874, of a very different design, and in 1886 was sold to the Howard family (whose descendants still live there) when Sir William and Lady Fox shifted to Auckland.

Building A was the Westoe Infants School, which still exists today, building C was the "elementary school" (for ages 7 to 11) and building E the Westoe Higher Grade School.
Their immediate solution was the use of folding screens in the hall to provide two additional classrooms, while they urged the council to consider the erection of a new Boys' High School.
At the same time, what was by now the Westoe Secondary School was also running into accommodation problems, and in a letter to the authority the school proposed that the existing school be replaced by separate secondary schools of "substantial size" for boys and girls.

As the railway was owned by the colliery, ownership passed to the National Coal Board after nationalisation of the coal industry on 31.12.1946.
The line to Westoe Colliery was electrified (overhead) in 1953 with the new electric trains looping past Westoe Lane Station, however the passenger service was withdrawn the same year.

The Band shot to fame in 1919 when it won the British Open Championship and became the first colliery band to win this premier award.
By 1958, the merging of neighbouring collieries was reflected in the band's name, which became 'Harton and Westoe Colliery Band', but Westoe Colliery was closed in 1993 and the band was faced with the task of finding new rehearsal facilities and financial support.
Thankfully, these are now provided by South Tyneside Health Care Trust and in return for the Trust's generous sponsorship, the Westoe Band performs for hospital events including fetes, fashion shows, church services and patient welfare, and is a popular musical combination within the local community.
