Westover was named for Henry West, fourth Lord Delaware and son of Thomas West, Governor of Virginia.
The special charm of the house lies in its elegant yet extremely simple form and proportions, combined with its perfect setting in the landscape, the essence of the artistic ideals of its period adapted to the style of living in Colonial Virginia.
There also are buried Theodorick Bland, from whom William Byrd I bought the Westover property in 1688; William Byrd I and his wife, the former Mary Horsemanden; and other distinguished early Virginians.

Shirley Plantation was founded six years after the settlers arrived at Jamestown in 1607 to establish the first permanent English Colony in the New World.
The plantation features the pineapple (the Colonial symbol of hospitality) in the hand-carved woodwork in the house, and as a three-foot finial on the peak of the roof.
Benjamin Harrison, son of the builder of Berkeley and the plantation's second owner, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and three-time Governor of Virginia.

The Tenth and Eleventh generations of the Hill-Carter family still live in the upper levels of the Shirley plantation house so we, as lowly tourists, were brought in through the back/work entrance of the house.
After leaving Shirley we took a short trip over to Westover Plantation which, despite the claims of the owners that it was built by William Byrd II, was built by his less ‘beloved’ son William Byrd III.
Westover is said to be one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in America, the front of Westover faces the river, an impressive sight to the guests who would be arriving by that route.

Westover Plantation is located on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia.
Westover Plantation was formerly claimed to have been built circa 1730 by William Byrd II, the founder of Richmond; this date appears in the 1960 designation of the house as a National Historic Landmark.
However, recent dendrochronologic testing on boards and planks in the house shows that they actually date to the 1750s, and this is the date of construction now recognised by the National Park Service.
