Westport (Cathair na Mart in Irish, literally 'the city of the beeves') is a town in County Mayo in the Republic of Ireland.
Westport House and Children's Animal and Bird Park is a particular draw for families, many of whom stay at the caravan and camping park which belongs to Westport House.
Westport is twinned with the town of Plougastel Daoulas in the département of Finistère in western Brittany.

Westport House is still owned and lived in by descendants of the family, which built it, the Browne family.
Following the 1798 rebellion, Westport House was initially used as the headquarters for the Irish forces, however following their defeat by the crown forces, martial law was introduced and following The Act of Union the title the Earl of Altamont was changed to the Marquess of Sligo.
Westport continued to prosper in the early 1800’s and the Marquess carried on with the town plan, which resulted in the completion of Westport’s most distinguishing feature, the Mall.

Westport is the largest and most important country house west of the Shannon and the only house by Richard Castle to remain in the possession of the family that built it.
In reduced circumstances, the family moved to Mount Browne outside Westport, but their fortune prospered again as a result of John Browne's marriage to Anne Gore, sister of the Earl of Arran, in 1729.
The paintings were commissioned on the completion of John Browne's new park- a massive undertaking that involved not just landscaping and planting trees, but moving the town of Westport from its position around the house to its present location about a mile distant, where a new planned town was created.
