Nickel (United States coin) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For 2004 and 2005, nickels featured new designs to commemorate the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition; these new designs were called the Westward Journey nickel series.
The shield nickel, designed by James B. Longacre, was the first nickel five-cent piece minted in the United States, in accordance with the Act of May 16, 1866.
Nickels of this series minted in Philadelphia have the unique distinction of being the only US coins minted prior to 1979 to bear a "P" mint mark.

Just as interesting is initially, when the first nickel was authorized by the Act of May 16, 1866, there were already in circulation what people at the time were calling “nickels.” These were the new copper-nickel three cent pieces which had first appeared in 1865.
In an emergency effort to conserve the two, the composition of the nickel was change to 56% copper, which was a reduction, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, meaning that for a time, the nickel actually contained no nickel.
Although the nickel is theoretically going to have a fixed design starting in 2006, the fact is that it has now been shown that changing nickel designs are popular and possible.

deseretnews.com | Buffalo nickels will roam again — by the millions
The Westward Journey Nickel Series is commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition, both of which occurred during the administration of the country's third president, Thomas Jefferson.
The series represents the first change in the nickel since 1938 when the Mint switched from the buffalo nickel with an American Indian on the opposite side to the Jefferson nickel that had a picture of Jefferson on one side and Monticello, Jefferson's home, on the other.
While the traditional portrait of Jefferson appeared on the two new nickels introduced last year, the new bison nickel has replaced the old version of Jefferson with a view that shows him in bolder profile and also features the word "Liberty" in Jefferson's handwriting.
