Books About Seventies Rock from The Bomp Bookshelf
So Black Oak Arkansas isn't (it doesn't fit musically), but Charlie Daniels,.38 Special, and Wet Willie get the nod.
The Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Allman Brothers get the most attention in Brant's chronological history that avoids dirt, "undue criticism," and lingering over trivialities (Gregg Allman's dalliance with Cher is barely mentioned).
Finding precise criteria for who is and isn't a southern rocker rather eel-ly, Brant finally settles on music and sensibility rather than geographical origins.

 Jimmy Hall
Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Hall co-founded Wet Willie in 1970; over the next ten years, Hall and the group toured with Aerosmith, the Allman Brothers Band, Grand Funk Railroad and the Grateful Dead.
After Wet Willie's breakup, Hall moved to Nashville to work on a solo project for Epic Records, and he's been based there ever since, finding a healthy blues scene in a city known for country music.
On his 1996 effort Rendezvous With The Blues, Hall is backed by people like Clayton Ivey on piano, former Capricorn session drummer Bill Stewart, and Dr. Dan Matrazzo on Hammond B-3 organ; the record also features Johnny Sandlin, the same producer who sat behind the console on Wet Willie's 1973 live album Drippin' Wet.

Wet Willie was home to many musicians who entered the realm of Willidom, depending somewhat on what extra instruments were needed to follow up the latest album release.
It should be noted that it was Lewis Ross, the ultimate Wet Willie funkmeister drummer, who actually assembled the musicians and group called Fox in the Summer of '69, which a year later became known as Wet Willie.

 MTV.com - Wet Willie
Wet Willie was, after the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the hardest-rocking of the Southern bands to come to national attention in the early 1970s.
The band issued one final album on Capricorn in 1977, which was followed, perhaps too closely, by Wet Willie's Greatest Hits (Capricorn by that time had run into severe financial problems and was releasing anything that looked like it might sell).
Wet Willie auditioned for Capricorn that summer and were at work on their debut album by the fall of that same year.

The History of Rock Music - The Sixties
Solid rhythms and searing guitars were also the main weapons in the arsenal of the Atlanta Rhythm Section, the Marshall Tucker Band Wet Willie, and many others.
Their debut album, The Allman Brothers Band (1969), introduced a form of loose, guitar-intensive blues-rock ballad, a southern version of the Band's roots-rock, but it was the live albums, Live At Fillmore East (1971) and Eat A Peach (1972), that transformed those ballads into epic sonic excursions.
One can find the prodromes of hard-rock in bands such as Cream (England), Blue Cheer (California) and Guess Who (Canada), that already emphasized amplification and centered the song around the guitar riff.

 Biography
Following the break-up of Vinegar Joe in 1974, Elkie briefly joined the line-up of boogie band Wet Willie, basing herself in the United States.
After leaving school at the age of 15 Elkie travelled to London where she became the singer with a dance band, before graduating to appearances with the respected jazz bandleader Humphrey Lyttelton (a professional association that is still enduring at the time of writing, 2003), while also making several early radio broadcasts.
In 1970 however she was persuaded by Pete Gage to join the jazz-fusion rock band Dada, and shared vocals with Paul Korda on their only album, called Dada, released by the Atlantic Records subsidiary label Atco.

In 1981, Betts formed BHLT with Jimmy Hall (from Wet Willie), Chuck Leavell, Butch Trucks and David Goldflies, but they too were doomed to a premature collapse and the guitarist withdrew from active work.
Betts formed a new unit, Great Southern, in 1976, but their progress faltered when the guitarist was drawn into the resurrected Allman Brothers Band fold.
Highway Call was released in 1974 but its promise was overshadowed by the parent band's own recordings.

Wet Willie : Left Coast Live - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Wet Willie lost the majority of its original members and direction after this final, contract fulfilling Capricorn release, but Left Coast Live remains a compelling and often exhilarating document of a gifted band in their prime.
With a completely different track listing than 1973's excellent Drippin' Wet, Left Coast Live captures all that was memorable about Wet Willie.
Lead vocal, sax, and harmonica man Jimmy Hall is in solid form as he hoots, hollers, shouts, moans, and blows like the soul men he obviously idolizes and the band, now tightened through almost a decade of playing one night stands, chugs along like a fine tuned engine pumped with high octane gas.

HistoryLink Essay:The Story of Willie Keil
On a wet, chilly November day, six months after they left Missouri, the Keil party reached their intended destination at Willapa near the Washington coast.  Nineteen-year-old Willie, in his coffin full of whiskey, was finally laid to rest.
Keil had the leading wagon fitted out as an ambulance so that he could keep his promise to his son.  Four days before the designated date of departure, Willie died.  That was May 19 in the year of l855.
It was carefully placed in the number one wagon, which Willie had hoped to drive.  The stories say that the Bethelites left on the appointed day, May 23, 1855, with Willie "sloshing around" in the alcohol.
