Although Wetherlam is part of the Coniston Fells it is set somewhat apart from the main group of peaks by the deep col of Swirl Hawse.
This isolation from its neighbours is further enhanced by its striking conical form and the dark crags on its flanks.
Closer inspection of Wetherlam will reveal within its profile a complex of ridges and spurs particularly on its eastern and northern flanks.

Langdale Pikes from Wetherlam summit, and the visibility was superb.

By Red Dell visibility was very restricted and without significant landmarks it became difficult to find the path; the final ~100m of ascent to Wetherlam was simply a matter of consistently heading upwards on sheep tracks or no path at all.
We stopped at the summit cairn for lunch, but there was no view, apart from momentary glimpses allowed by swirling cloud, which only confused my sense of direction ("there shouldn't be a ridge there") and made me wonder whether were were even at the true summit.

 A Lake District Walk - The Coniston Fells Walk
The stiff climb to the Old Man, the ridge and then the exciting crossing of the Prison Band to Wetherlam was a memorable experience on my first walk in Coniston.
After Swirl Hause the climb to Wetherlam is straight forward, a steady climb of 130 metres over a kilometre, a little more if you choose to include bagging the peak of Black Sails.
After Wetherlam the traditional walk tracks south off the mountain back to Coniston but as I had done the traditional before I wanted to make this different.

By the side of the lake some instructors were teaching a bunch of kids the ins and outs of canoeing, or kayaking as Sarah prefers.
Rounding the corner the path started to gradually rise and headed towards Birk Fell, the continuation of Wetherlam's eastern shoulder.

 Walking Route: Swirl How and Wetherlam - OUTDOORSmagic Walking
The ascent from Little Langdale takes in the hollow mountain, Wetherlam, where Wainwright counted over a hundred entrances to the copper mines.
The ridge leads directly up to the summit cairn where the views extend over Little Langdale to Windermere to the north east, and Coniston to the south east.
A climb up to your right alongside Birk Fell Beck puts you on the ridge down from Wetherlam, but to save the ascent it's easier to return along the outbound path.

 Coniston Horseshoe
When we came to Cumbria the second time, our intention had been to do the ridge walk to Wetherlam from The Old Man of Coniston, but our inexperience at the time meant we decided not to go on from The Old Man because we were not sure of how long it would take us.
From here, the ridge is not steep, and the walk to Wetherlam was much more pleasant and straightforward than we had expected from looking at it from Wrynose.
Before too long, we reached Wetherlam's summit, from where we were able to see quite a long way towards the Langdales and also Windermere.

Wetherlam is my favourite hill coz you can get good views in every direction from the top.

It's one of the few hostels where you can have a bonfire, and is tucked away on the slopes of Wetherlam and Coniston Old Man.
They were not disappointed, and after as little as half an hour the sun was shining bringing out all the autumn colours.
The wind hit them at Wetherlam Edge, and they made their way carefully up this steep route to the summit - where it was even windier (no photos).

This was the toughest walk that our leader, John, has put us through for a white.
3750ft of ascent on a warm day had one or two of us struggling up the last ascent to Wetherlam's summit.
I was one of those who struggled but I'm glad I completed and didn't take one of the opportunities to cut short the walk.

 A Coniston Circuit
The original idea was to return via the Dow Crag ridge, but as the tops were misted out on the second day and we had never visited Goats Water before, we descended below the crags instead.
From Coniston we took the Church Beck path and crossed at Miners Bridge to approach Wetherlam from the S ridge.
Unlike our previous visit, we kept to the right hand path on the upper slopes to ensure that we found the beautiful group of tarns before the first false summit.

Wetherlam and Arnison Crag, but not on the same day!
I had intended to ascend Wetherlam and continue to Swirl How and Great Carrs but persistent low cloud meant that photography would be limited so instead I stayed below the clag for a wander on the slopes of Wetherlam above Greenburn.
Two days later the gales and rain forecast for Sunady had not materialised so I took a drive over Kirkstone Pass with the intention of ascending Arnison Crag, Birks and possibly even St.Sunday Crag.

A quick check with my gadget showed that the wind was 32mph [ 51kph] and the wind chill was - 10 °C.
I turned and started to descend via Wetherlam Edge.
I met my first people, a group of 7 or 8 men all keeping their heads down and well battened down in cagoules.

The paths around here are all well worn so navigation problems tend not to be so troublesome.
Wetherlam's your next summit, it is said that it has some of the finest views of the Lake District to be seen here with a pleasant mix of woodland, pasture, lake and fell spread out before you.
As for low level walks, Tarn Hows is apparently a very nice place to visit.

 Over-ruling Wainwright
This opinion was confirmed when going up Wetherlam Edge.
Great Intake is a final crown of the Edge offering a significant final climb which is sufficiently far from Wetherlam for it to be considered a separate peak.
It seems to offer a super view over Little Langdale and down to Windermere.

 Wetherlam and cathedral quarry
Scrambling up Yewdale Beck and then Tilberthwaite Gill would provide a suitable start for a trip over Wetherlam and then on to "bag" the remaining Coniston Fells that we missed out on back in February, Great Carrs and Grey Friar.
we turned our backs on the rest of the Coniston Fells and set off back down Wetherlam Edge.
There are many more, some quite fascinating about the history of mining, but I forgot to bookmark them !
