The Wetterhorn is a mountain in the Swiss Alps close to the village of Grindelwald.
Sir Winston Churchill climbed the Wetterhorn in 1894.
Its peak was also the intended terminal for the world's first people-carrying aerial tramway, but only the first quarter section of the lift was built and in operation until the beginning of World War 1.

Wetterhorn was likely scaled by miners working in the area during the silver and gold rush toward the end of the 19th century.
To approach Wetterhorn from the northwest via Wetterhorn Basin, from the junction of Highways 50 and 550 in Montrose, head south toward Ridgway (38 miles) or Ouray (49 miles).
Wetterhorn Peak is in the Uncompahgre Wilderness Uncompahgre National Forest.

A pretty fierce-looking ridge runs west to Wetterhorn, the summit of which was still hidden behind the steep buttress where the peak’s southeast ridge terminates.
A fine view of stately Uncompahgre Peak to the east had developed as we climbed up the basin, but now the layers of cloud which hid the sun were solidifying, and descending slowly upon that peak; the summit was wreathed in cloud.
Wetterhorn was a beautiful, dramatic peak with an interesting route, a lot of personality and more exposure than I really need.

Wetterhorn rises abruptly in one direction, while Uncompahgre's bulk looms to the east.
The summit of Wetterhorn itself was in quite a state of disrepair when I was there: there was no register and the summit cairn was a mere mound of rocks hardly a foot high spread out three feet across.

Expanding on my Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn outing, I started off this part of the trip by arriving at the Matterhorn TH, meeting a couple of hikers and then driving a hiker back down from the TH to the main road.
After having walked across the very expansive valley between Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre in the morning while the ground was frozen, I had the task of returning across the valley during late morning when the viscosity of the mud really started to increase.
The climb up Wetterhorn was confusing as there seemed to be many tracks in the snow, but only one set of tracks on what seemed to be the main trail.

Wetterhorn seems to be more efficient at minimizing CPU time spent on managing the UDP/IP processing.
I'm unclear one exactly why this is, but the inconsistent results for Wetterhorn on User and CPU time I would attribute to the Pentium II architecture.
I think the change is because of the difference in architecture between Wetterhorn (Intel) and Zeppo (SUN Enterprise ULTRA SPARC) where the bytes get inverted because of the different formats used.

Of all the fourteeners with exposure, Wetterhorn ranks near the top of my list for "scary" and I was curious to see if it would bother me the second time around.
Jason hadn't done Wetterhorn yet and Tim was eager for a repeat even after climbing it just last year.
Wetterhorn's large summit, which I hadn't paid attention to last time because of poor weather and my immediate retreat, was so much fun that we stayed nearly an hour.

I made it back to the car after an elapsed time of just 6:01, about an hour short of what I expected, but the going was pretty easy except for the ridge and I didn't spend much time on top.
Oh well, the next time I climb Wetterhorn, I'll come earlier in the year and do the east face snow climb.
Wetterhorn will always be significant because this is #27, my halfway point of the Colorado 14ers.

I would be doing Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre with Kirk, Ken, and Jim.
This was probably a combination of the fact that it had been crystal clear the night before and was cloudy this morning.
This is what everyone did execpt for me. I saw a cairn at the lefthand corner of the ledge about 20 feet away and walked the ledge around the corner to some slightly easier cliffs.

Wetterhorn Peak last year, due to snow, we were giving it another try on a long 4th of July weekend, 2004.
Picture opportunity #1 came as the East Ridge of Wetterhorn came into view, with 13,590 foot Matterhorn Peak on the east end of the ridge.
Just about down off the steep east slopes of Wetterhorn, and only about an hour away from the beer, I got this last shot of Uncompahgre Peak looking through the pass with the lower southeast slopes of Matterhorn Peak on the left.

This Matterhorn Pk -- not the original one in the Swiss Alps -- is dwarfed between the two 14'ers Wetterhorn Pk (7/8 mi to the WSW) and Uncompahgre Pk (1.9 mi to the ENE, a figure Garratt & Martin have incorrectly as 0.9 mi).
I climbed Matterhorn immediately after climbing Wetterhorn, so you should see my account there for information on trailheads, camping, etc. One climb ends and the other begins at about the 12,200 - 12,300 ft level in the meadows 1/3 mi S of Matterhorn's summit.
Those attacking just Matterhorn, or climbing it first to warm up for Wetterhorn, can stay on the main Matterhorn Crk trail to about the same elevation before exiting left for these same slopes, which gradually steepen and begin to show rocks.

It was attractive but impossible for me to get up early enough to be high on Wetterhorn for sunrise.
Wetterhorn is a nasty-looking pinnacle with only one non-technical route to the top.
Once past the couple hundred feet of bare rock that comprises the summit and S ridge, it's a stroll down tundra and flowers to the main trail.

On wetterhorn, run "idg2s -d -n 10 sanluis 32936" assume 32936 is the port number reported by idgr on sanlluis.
On wetterhorn, run "ist2s -d sanluis 33065" assume 33065 is the port number reported by istr on sanlluis.
Since zeppo is SPARC that is little endian (if I am correct) and since wetterhorn is i386 (CISC) it is big endian.

The trail we used last time was closed for restoration so we followed the new trail further up the basin before heading left towards Wetterhorn Peak.
Amy’s ribs were still sore from here slip on Wetterhorn Peak so she opted to skirt the snowfield and stick to the rocks until the snow slope was gentle enough to walk down.

As you disembark, a massive sweep of mountains greets you, stretching from Wetterhorn in the east to Schilthorn to the south-west.
This dramatic setting is the starting point for a downhill hike through high mountain country, via Kleine Scheidegg to the glaciers plunging from the massive peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and a traverse beneath the Eiger's imperious north face.
The pastures are rather developed with cable lines and the path is very touristed, but the mountain views are superb: Grindelwald valley and the peaks of Wetterhorn and Mättenberg, the Eiger and Mönch, all accompanied by the ever present clanking of cowbells.

I tell you these basin are just incredibly beautiful and as we hiked up the switch backs we heard sheep in the distance and could see at least one sheep herders tent on the mountainside.
The guidebook for the Wetterhorn climb describes leaving the main trial at 12,000 to head southeast to the base of the Wetterhorn.
The key is to find a small trail heading up a small gully that leads to a good trail just to the east (left) of the orange color rock on the ridge at 13,000.

I was meeting Tracey at the trailhead tomorrow night after she drove most of the night to get there from Winter Park.

After a short time it stopped raining completely, and, finding myself drier and warmer, looking up at Wetterhorn Peak, I decided, what the heck, to climb some more.
So I sidehilled up to about 12500' on the SE ridge, where at about 1830 (two hours before dark), I was clearly too far away to make it to the peak -- which then got enshrouded in clouds again.

The drive to the upper trailhead went quickly and we were surprised to see 2WD cars within 0.6 miles of the 4WD parking lot.
As the sun was rising on the peaks, we noticed a large party of hikers crossing the saddle en route to Uncompaghre.

We had considered doing both peaks the day before but clouds had threatened so we were going for Wetterhorn this day.
We hiked NW and then S to gain the southeast ridge of Wetterhorn at 13,100.
From there we stayed on the ridge and hiked N sticking to the ridge for the most part (some scrambling up on the west side of the ridge).

When the mother found out I hadn't brought anything to prepare warm food she offered to share some of the soup they were preparing.
While Uncompahgre is really just a big hill the smaller Wetterhorn is a true mountain with a fun class 3 climb to the summit.
This last part of the climb was the most fun I've had on a fourteener and climbing on the basalt rock of Wetterhorn reminded me of rock climbing in White Rock Canyon.
