		In 1285, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order sanctioned the new foundation of a settlement in Wetzlar, Marburg Brothers purchased a plot in the centre of town from the Wetzlar “Marienstift” (St. Mary’s Monastery) and built the “Wetzlar House” into which they moved with a small convent.
		It was not until early modern times that the administration of the Wetzlar House was transferred from members of the Order to secular servants of the Teutonic Order, who were then referred to as “Verwalter” (administrators) or “Amtmänner” (bailiffs).
		In 1740, Heinrich Adam Buff, born in Steinbach in the region of Giessen in 1711, became an administrator with the Teutonic Order and was entrusted with the management of the affairs of the Wetzlar Order.
