Wewak is the capital of the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea.
Wewak is linked by road to three villages on the Sepik River: Angoram, Timbunke, and Pagwe.
In addition, a coastal highway extends to the west linking Wewak with the coastal towns of Aitape and Vanimo, which is the capital of Sandaun provence.

The shaking was responsible for landslides, liquefaction, collapsed buildings and water tanks, a severed water supply main for the town of Wewak and, remarkably, the uplift of the outer islands by 30-40 cm.
Residents reported that the earthquake was preceded by, and accompanied by, a roaring noise that approached Wewak from the west-northwest.
On this particular day at high tide, the sea level was observed to be 30 to 50 cm less than the level normally expected for the high tide, as indicated to the ITST by local residents on a log bridge and on the root outcrop of a tree growing at the shoreline.

Wewak is a town on the northern coast of New Guinea, which in 1942 was the administrative centre for the Sepik District.
In December of that year it was occupied by the Japanese and subsequently developed as their largest base in New Guinea, with both a substantial airfield and small-scale port facilities.
Wewak airfield was captured without opposition on 12 May. Five Australians and up to 200 Japanese were killed in the fighting for Wewak.

Uneventful fighter sweeps to Wewak and routine valley patrols were our lot until the 18th, when we escorted bombers to Hansa Bay without incident.
Needless to say his presence was like a return from the grave, and he was the only one able to cross his name off the squadron scoreboard which also listed the deceased pilots.
The last day of the month the squadron was on alert awaiting a chance to aid in the landing on Admiralty Isle by going to Wewak, but the month ended on a sour note as our boys never had the occasion to get off the ground.

Initially, Wewak had been built up as a major enemy base in which the Japanese had poured the best of their air force units.
On the raid of 25 August the 43rd and 90th Groups claimed they destroyed approximately 200 enemy planes at the Japanese base, and thus caused the enemy to shift their major strength from Wewak to Hollandia, farther up the New Guinea coast.
After one mission to Wewak on the first of December, the 43rd devoted its efforts to the neutralization of enemy airdromes in New Britain during the remainder of the month.
