I prefer Wexis." You'll notice a line that asks whether you'd like to choose "time billing" or "transactional billing." Right now, as we bait the hook and reel you in, everything is free.
And while it's true that most firms pay a flat rate larger than the nation's GDP to have unlimited access to Wexis, they pass those costs to their clients with a substantial markup, so it's important to bill for as many searches as possible.
Wexis wishes those clients would disappear, and is working on a Wexis client disappearing tool that you will soon be able to buy for just a few hundred Wexis points.

Maryland Law: Fastcase: A Preliminary Assessment
Like Wexis (as some have dubbed the two main legal information providers), it provides Boolean, natural language, and citation searching.
And, like Wexis, it provides a results list with your terms in bold and the option to print the case in two-column format.
But, UNlike Wexis, which comes with a hefty price tag, assuming you’re an MSBA member, Fastcase is free.

 COMMENTS
A friend of mine went to a law school where students don't get WeXIS passwords in their first semester (and this was Fall 2002).
She honestly believed that she would be at a great competitive disadvantage compared to students who had used Lexis and Westlaw since day 1 when it came time for OCI.
Legal research positions are highly competitive (at least in the DC area) and if you look at the credentials of those teaching, all are large firm expatriates, born and bred on an unlimited WEXIS account.

Law Librarian Blog: Law Firm Survey: Federal Reporter and Federal Supplement Retention and Retrieval Practices
The survey I sent consisted of four questions that focused on the retention of hard copy reporters, how the costs for retrieval of decisions via WEXIS are handled (overhead or client charged) and if use of “free” resources are encouraged.
There were statements indicating that the cost of obtaining a case via WEXIS was less expensive than manually copying it.
There was an even distribution of responses between relying on WEXIS for retrieval due to editorial enhancements and choosing a source based on attorney preference.

Colleagues: This is the promised summary to the Wexis questions I posed on Friday, April 4th.
That being said, if they are using Wexis for non-billable research, attorneys have to put in a valid "investment time" number to be charged against their own client development number or against the departmental marketing budget.
If Wexis is listening, are you hearing from law firms that they having an increasingly hard time passing through the cost of on-line research?

This seems to be what happened with me and California Law Review, where Cal L Rev thought it was a good idea to reduce open access to the work they published, and demanded that I take down open access versions of my articles.
Their stated reason was their (alleged) loss of revenue from Wexis.
The significant formal response at the moment is to note that there is no contractual exclusivity requirement in the Wexis agreements.

I find it particularly helpful for finding books when I'm missing a piece of crucial information about the title.
There have been several instances when a law student has spent an hour searching in vain for something in Lexis or Westlaw (which would be horrifyingly expensive in "real world" Wexis billing), and then I find the document in a minute or two with Google or Vivisimo - my other favourite search engine.
I guess my point is that web search are a very helpful supplement to the more established research methods, but you would be most unwise to rely on them exclusively.

Reed Elsevier also quotes from the database protection report of the Copyright Office.
Reed Elsevier's latest position, supporting the copyrightability of the text of court opinions is just one more illustration of the phenomena of "Wexis", the anticompetitive consortium between West and Lexis which resulted from the 1988 secret agreements between West and Mead (former owner of Lexis).
In addition, this latest action demonstrates the naivete of the Antitrust Division and State Attorney Generals who relied upon Lexis to express the public's interests during the negotiations to approve the acquisition of West by Thompson.
