Topic: Weyer

Will the Real Johann Weyer Please Stand Up
Weyer is a hero to proponents of the psychopathological interpretation of witch hunts; these scholars were psychiatrists and psychologists who turned their efforts toward writing histories of their professions.
Weyer's case was so weak that the opposition was astounded when he dared to republish it; their response demolished his contentions, and the net result of his efforts was to exacerbate an already tense situation.
Weyer described, in great detail, the horrifying powers of Satan and his demonic minions in order to set up his major contentions: In the first place, there is a grave threat to society from evil magicians who carry out their studies with the aid of demons.

Johann Weyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From 1534, Weyer studied medicine in Paris and later in Orleans (It appears unlikely that he obtained the title of Doctor through these studies).
In spite of a subsidy from emperor Charles V, Arnhem was no longer able to pay Weyer's salary in 1550 and Weyer moved to Cleves, where he became court doctor to duke Wilhelm V von Jülich-Kleve-Berg, through mediation by humanist Konrad Heresbach.
Weyer criticised the Malleus Maleficarum and the witch hunting by the Christian authorities; he was said to have been the first person that used the term "mentally ill" to designate those women accused of practising witchcraft.

Unnatural Predators: Johan Weyer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Weyer's appointment as tutor to the King of France's sons took him on many travels, but it was while he was the physician at the court of Cleves that he wrote the volumes which gave him a place in Witch Hunting history.
But Weyer opposed the worst excesses of the witch hunts and argued that many of the illnesses attributed to sorcery plus accounts of flying, Sabbats etc, were due to confused minds and medical conditions; for this, he is regarded by many as the father of modern psychiatry.
Weyer was motivated primarily by a sense of humanity: his writings lack the logical rigour of his opponents, such as Bodin which unfortunately made him somewhat vulnerable to well reasoned criticism of his time.

To Prevent a "Shipwreck of Souls": Johann Weyer and "De Praestigiis Daemonum." Elisa Slattery
Weyer argued strongly for the limits placed on the devil's behavior by natural laws which he defined as "the measure and order established by God."11 According to Weyer, the devil had physical powers carefully limited by God, and the duty of a good observer was to discover what the devil could and could not do.
Weyer stopped a witchcraft investigation by arguing that an ill nobleman was "a victim not of maleficium but of demonic possession."15 The devil was busy at work in the world but he acted directly, not through witches as intermediaries.
Baxter accuses Weyer of falling short of "the tolerant Erasmian" portrayed by Trevor-Roper and of using his categories to extend rather than restrict the "class of potential victims of persecution."47 This accusation seems misguided, however, because Weyer's defense of heretics is both Erasmian and somewhat unnecessary to his defense of witches.
