Ruapehu has two commercial skifields, Whakapapa on the northern side and Turoa on the southern slope.
Both skifields are accessible by car and chairlifts, with beginners to advanced skiing slopes.
On July 5, 2003 about 350 skiers and 70 skifield staff were trapped on the mountain overnight at Top o'the Bruce when a sudden snow storm blew up and within a few minutes made the access road too dangerous to descend.

We went up to the skifield (top of the Bruce) and a lot of equipment, lighting rigs, cables, etcetera, were set up in Happy Valley skifield – at the time (Saturday), totally snowless, very rocky and misty, wonderfully atmospheric.
On Tuesday morning the ski lodge owner where we were staying said that this Marquee tent was Weta's 300 person costume tent and had been snowed under during the night, and part of it had collapsed causing damage.
The lady at the Ohakune visistors centre said that they had been filming round Whakapapa that week, over Easter near Tukino and this week were moving round to film on the Turoa side of the mountain.

The ash has mainly been falling towards the east leaving Whakapapa and Turoa relatively free from ash.
Obviously the wind has changed, causing the 150 people employed by the skifield for the season to lose their jobs.

Deciding that Whakapapa was really a better site, our members then drove a road through to what is now The Chateau site and in 1923 they built at 1750m the tiny Glacier Hut which today is preserved and protected as a mountain museum.
Ski tests in which skiers earn badges at novice to expert levels by showing their ability in exam situations have long been popular, especially with the many youngsters who ski with us each year as part of family groups.
Members were also to the fore in mapping Whakapapa, setting up shelters at several places, operating the Ski Patrol, staffing the NZ Ski Association and running the Ruapehu Mountain Clubs Association which was formed after more than 50 other clubs joined us at Whakapapa.
