  Rotorua New Zealand - Whakarewarewa
Whakarewarewa is the reduced version of "Te Whakarewarewatanga - o - te - Ope - a - Waihiao", meaning "the uprising of the war party at Waihiao".
Whakarewarewa is approximately 3 kilometres from Rotorua, near the banks of the Puarenga river.
Whakarewarewa is often visited for its 500 or so hot springs, many of which are encased in what are called "sinter" pools - a porous encrustation of silica or mineral deposit, which seems to take on different hues (but which are generally white or gray).

Rotorua, New Zealand - Maori Culture, Whakarewarewa, Ohinemutu & Ngati Wahiao
The village of Whakarewarewa is one of Rotorua's most active thermal areas and is home to the Pohutu geyser famed throughout the world for her playing, erupting about 20 times a day.
Whakarewarewa is home to the Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao people who settled there after the Tarawera eruption destroyed their homes at Te Wairoa.
On the fringe of the thermal reserve is Te Puia which was opened in 1963 under an official act of Parliament to teach traditional Maori crafts such as carving and weaving - arts many feared may become lost.

Shortly afterwards, Lloyd successfully opposed two water-right application for deep bores immediately adjacent to the Whakarewarewa geyser field, and was able to demonstrate that the decline in geyser activity was due to extraction by household bores, and that further extraction would have disastrous effects of the remaining geysers.

They state that, although parts of the surface features relating to the Rotorua geothermal field at Whakarewarewa are now in Crown ownership, the Tuhourangi and Ngati Wahiao arc landowners at Whakarewarewa and the geothermal resource there has remained central to their lifestyle and identity to the present day.
The Whakarewarewa claimants note that they well understand that the geothermal field which manifests itself at Whakarewarewa is part of a larger interconnected field which appears at Ohinemutu and other parts of the Rotorua geothermal field.
