Whaley Bridge continues to expand as new housing is built, but it retains the character of a small town.

Passing under the "snake bridge" we made a sharp right turn onto the Upper Peak Forest and then a sharp left turn into the congested Top Lock Marine for a fill up and a much needed pump-out.
Our plan was to moor for the night at the terminus at Whaley Bridge, but most of the moorings were taken.
As in most populated areas, the locks and moveable bridges are equipped with anti-vandal locks and this one was jammed with chewing gum and other substances that I would rather not try and describe.

The B and C walks all start and finish in Whaley Bridge where there are toilets and the usual end of walk facilities.
Starting at the “Royal Oak” on the A6 between Hazel Grove and High Lane, we skirt some woodland to reach the towpath of the Macclesfield canal which is then followed south for a mile to the marina at Higher Poynton where there are toilet facilities and a very interesting visitors centre.
Starting from Whaley Bridge, we walk over the dam at the end of Toddbrook Reservoir and proceed to the attractive village of Taxal via fields and hard paths.

An early dusk was drawing in as we made a final push for Whaley Bridge only to be frustrated by wet electrics finally killing the transformer/charger and we ran out of steam at the edge of Furness Vale Marina.
Sadly the top basin by the Navigation proved to be just too far and after thrashing around in the mud for some time it was decided to retreat to the horse bridge opposite the new amenities block and thence to the pub.
