Whalsay is a principal centre of the Shetland fishing industry and the long fishing tradition is one of the themes of the Hanseatic Booth at Symbister, which tells the story of Shetland's links with the Hanseatic League.
This house on the island of Whalsay was where Hugh MacDiarmid, arguably the greatest Scottish poet of his generation, lived from 1935 to 1942.
The Whalsay Golf Club, situated at Skaw at the North East point of the island, is 6009 yards, par 70, and standard scratch 70.

Josie Simpson, the councillor for Whalsay and a retired skipper who is also chairman of the Shetland Fishermen’s Association, said that the loss of the boats, and the jobs dependent on a thriving white fish fleet, would have a devastating effect on the island’s economy.

The EASTERN BONELLI'S WARBLER is at the Grutness garden, a MARSH WARBLER is at Gorie, Bressay, a WRYNECK is at Sumburgh and a HOOPOE is on Whalsay.

Elsewhere the NIGHTINGALE was still at the small 'quarry' along the road to the Sumburgh Lighthouse (the quarry closest to the lighthouse), a KINGFISHER is at Voe, a BLACK REDSTART and a WOODCOCK are at Quendale, a COMMON REDSTART is at Maywick and 4 SCAUP are at Scatness.
Very few Storm Petrels have been recorded in Shetland waters before the beginning of May. A freshly dead adult on Whalsay in mid March 1981 and one flying past Sumburgh Head on 6th April 1973 are easily the earliest records.
Previous records were singles on Whalsay on the 3rd November 1976, Virkie on the 20-23rd May 1985, Urafirth on the 26th May 1987 and Whalsay again on the 18-22nd May 1988.

On Friday the 1st October they will be performing in the Symbister Hall, Whalsay and on Saturday the 2nd October they will be appearing at the Bressay Hall in Bressay.
