Do not believe the myth that it rains all the time, because it doesn't, the weather is warm, Northland is known as the winterless north.
Whangarei is about 2 hour drive north of Auckland, has good recreation facilities etc........I guess it just depends what you are looking for.

My second visit to Whangarei was months later as I completed my trip round New Zealand – at least, in terms of returning to the starting point.
Whangarei was hot and humid, but seeing Peter and his family again was worth the effort (I'd met Peter, the local dealer, on my previous visit).

Whangarei Town Marina Manager and former NZ Customs agent Lou Sabin said that as of 5 December the town docks are fully booked, but that he has never turned a visiting yacht away.
Sabin is proud of new visitor floats in front of the Harbourmaster's Office and a new shower, toilet and laundry block across the harbour.
