Wharton County comprises 1,086 square miles and is divided primarily between prairie and timber land.
The county lands are drained by Mustang Creek in the extreme west, the Colorado River in the central portions, and the San Bernard River and West Bernard Creek in the eastern portions.
The county was the leading Texas rice producer and third among Texas counties in beef cattle; in 1970, 87,059 cattle roamed on 89,000 acres of county rangeland.

Jones Creek, a dispersed rural community, is at a site on Jones Creek and Farm Road 2546, northwest of Lakeview oilfield and east of State Highway 71 in northwestern Wharton County.
In 1905 the Jones Creek school enrolled forty-nine pupils and had one teacher; by 1926 there were two Jones Creek schools, one for ninety-three white and one for thirty-five fl pupils.
The 1927 Wharton County Poll Tax roll listed sixty-one white registrants, seven of whom were women, and four colored registrants, one of whom was a woman.
