Price of Glory - Rotten Tomatoes
PRICE OF GLORY tells the uplifting story of Arturo Ortega (Jimmy Smits), a former boxer who lost his chance at glory when a greedy promoter pushed him into the ring prematurely.
Price of Glory isn't awful, it's merely pointless.
The specificity of Glory's setting and the ethnicity of its characters enrich the story without moving it one iota away from a mainstream frame of reference.

Odyssey Card Preview: Price of Glory
Price of Glory stands to be particularly powerful in concert with haste creatures, forcing your opponent to either sacrifice land to deal with them or suffer the full brunt of your Skizzik/Blazing Specter/Fires of Yavimaya-enhanced creature assault.
One important detail to keep in mind with Price of Glory, however, is that as much as it is a disincentive for a player to use his mana on the opponent's turn, in desperate circumstances you still CAN; City of Solitude it is not.
Because of this, Price of Glory is likely to be much more effective in aggressive decks that put a great deal of pressure on the opponent and can make the loss of land as painful as possible rather than in combo decks that set up for big turn "going off".

 Review: Price of Glory
Price of Glory puts all of this together with some skill, and, for variety, adds a Latino spin to things, but, taken as a whole, there's very little here that's new.
Price of Glory is the first of those post-NYPD Blue films to reach the screen, and it shows Smits in the best possible light.
However, in Price of Glory, the fights are presented in a routine and rather hum-drum fashion that not only dilutes tension but distances the viewer from the action.

 Price of Glory (2000): Reviews
Price of Glory isn't an embarrassment on the order of the last major boxing movie, "Play It to the Bone," but it's not especially worth intercepting on its way to the video racks.
Price of Glory gives us two hours of that behavior, and it's a miscalculation so basic that it makes the movie painful when it wants, I guess, to be touching.
The specificity of Glory's setting and the ethnicity of its characters enrich the story without moving it one iota away from a mainstream frame of reference.

Sickness prevented John Ford from filming all of Mister Roberts, which still bears the mark of his over-the-top slapstick comedy, the booze 'n brawl humor that's either the highlight or the nadir of his westerns and cavalry pictures, depending on one's temperament.
But he's totally in charge of What Price Glory (a title that really begs for a question-mark) and it just seems that he hasn't much to add to the ritualized clowning about.
Fox's DVD of What Price Glory looks just about perfect, allowing us to admire the handsome art direction.

 The High Price of Glory
It is worth noting as well that some things were not normally bought and sold, so the cash price is inflated due to an artificial scarcity.
The culture and legal system was such that no one sold land, so there was none to buy, at least not straight up for cash.) Hussar horses were normally reared and trained by your own estate, by you, your relatives and servants.
Failing that, you might have to buy a horse for hard cash on the 'open market' and such a horse would be a rare find- since no one sold their own horses for any price, except under unusual circumstances.

"Price of Glory" has a lot of great boxing sequences and I did like the evolution of the child boxer but being an outsider to this culture it is a little hard to grasp the motive locked within Smits' beautiful portrayal.

 DVD Review: Price Of Glory
"Price Of Glory" is a small film about boxing that got a minor theatrical release early this year, but was mostly overlooked by audiences.
The film stars Jimmy Smits as Arturo Ortez, a former boxer who sees the possibility to achieve the success in the sport that he didn't achieve through his young sons, who he is training to be boxers.
Final Thoughts: "Price Of Glory" is worth a rental, especially for fans of the sport.

Though Roland is old enough to be my father, we both fondly remember the halcyon 1960s, when it was still possible to buy those same top-ranked French premier grand crus in a historic run of recent great years—'55, '59, '61, and '66—for less than $10 a bottle.
Priced at $19 a bottle, this St.-Emilion was not nearly as good as Château Simard, a Saint-Emilion that's now widely available in the 1989 vintage for about the same price.

The document, written by assistant secretary Richard Clarida, found that a war was unlikely to "derail the expansion," but it did project a worst-case scenario that could reduce GDP growth by 0.9 percent, raise unemployment by three-tenths of a point, and increase inflation.
Clarida's forecast, however, deals only with the impact from fluctuations in the price of oil.
Not until the last two paragraphs of the four-page memo does he acknowledge that the economic impact of war might not be limited to rising oil prices.

What Price Glory Movie Review (1952) from Channel 4 Film
The spats between Flagg and Quirt as they compete over a flighty local girl (Calvet) are the narrative heart of the film, with the actual mission (the capture of a German officer) feeling oddly tacked on.
A loose remake of a popular silent film, What Price Glory has all of Ford's trademarks - brawls, boozing and blatant sentimentality - but there's little of the bittersweet genius that makes the likes of The Searchers, Fort Apache and even The Quiet Man exceed the sum of their parts.
Old-fashioned (even in 1952) and stagy, What Price Glory is entertaining enough, but it's no more than a minor entry on the CVs of Ford and Cagney.

James Cagney signed on to play Captain Flagg in 20th Century Fox's 1952 remake of the 1926 classic What Price Glory after being told that the old property was being converted into a musical.
By the time Cagney learned that Fox had no intention of adding songs and dances to the venerable Maxwell Anderson/Laurence Stallings stage piece, it was too late to pull out, so he decided to grin (sometimes) and bear it.
Contrasting the rough-hewn hijinks of Flagg, Quirt and their fellow Marines on the fields and in the villages of World War I-era France is the doomed romance between private Robert Wagner and French lass Marisa Pavan.

Unfortunately, the comedy is hardly as fresh as it needs to be, and it doesn't mesh with the more serious segments that deal directly with the war, giving the film a somewhat schizophrenic feeling.
Shooting almost entirely on a soundstage, Ford isn't able to indulge his penchant for sweeping vistas and Glory thus feels rather cramped.
What Glory does have working in its favor is its cast, led by the friendly (and sometimes not-so-friendly) brawling of James Cagney and Dan Dailey, who evince a positively bracing chemistry.

There's a point in this movie where it went from being enjoyable in its look at family dynamics from a Latino point of view that is usually not seen in mainstream Hollywood, to being a candidate for TV Movie-Of-The-Week.
I can't quite pinpoint where Price Of Glory lost its slight edge, but it's there.
Or maybe I was just so thrilled to see so many Latinos portrayed on the Silver Screen without the stereotypically scripted behavior we've come to expect, that I didn't notice the lack of depth all along.
