The failure of the film could be blamed on the relationship between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez falling apart during the filming of this film, as it was already on rocky ground after the failure of Gigli the year prior.

 Terminus - Jersey Girl (2004)
When it finally opened in theaters around the country, Jersey Girl did fairly well, easily becoming the highest-grossing Kevin Smith film.
J.Lo's scenes are clustered in the beginning of the film, her character dies early in the first act, and that's the end of that.
Trailers were re-cut to hide the presence of J.Lo, and the film itself was re-cut to minimize her screentime.

"Jersey Girl" is a very sweet movie about family, and honestly I could never expect such sensitive story from Kevin Smith.

March 2004 blackfilm.com reviews film jersey girl
Jersey Girl, his latest film with muse Ben Affleck, is a shameless exercise in melodrama.
Jersey Girl is flawed not because of the believability of his characters, but their cookie-cutter responses to life changing moments.
Much of the film's humor is the result of Affleck fleshing out the dialogue in a believable manner.

dOc DVD Review: Jersey Girl (2004)
Jersey Girl was Kevin Smith's first attempt at mainstream filmmaking, and it succeeds more than the box office returns would have you believe.
Many theories surround the box-office failure of Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl: the overexposure of the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez romance, the failure of the Bennifer vehicle Gigli, the fact that it was a change of pace for the director, who specializes in talky, self-described "d*ck and fart joke" comedies.
She jumpstarts Ollie's life, and the film, and Liv Tyler gives an adorable performance that, like the rest of the film, is right on the edge of sappiness, but she never falters.

 Jersey Girl (2004): Reviews
The biggest problem with Jersey Girl may not be exactly its fault; what is up there on the screen is cute and funny and heartfelt, even if it is unflinchingly formulaic.
As an ode to fatherhood, Jersey Girl is sweet without being particularly deep; but Smith is really onto something when he nudges against the ways in which the geographic landscape of a life merges with the genetic one.
Jersey Girl may have come from his soul, but it contradicts the charm of a Kevin Smith movie.

Critic Doctor (Herb Kane) - Review by Peter Sobsczynski: Jersey Girl (2004)
"Jersey Girl", the latest film from writer-director Kevin Smith, the man behind such Sundance-era classics as "Clerks", "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma", is his most blatant attempt to date to create a crowd-pleasing hit.
"Jersey Girl", for all of its wit and insight, is a film that is fairly indistinguishable from other films of its type (such as "About a Boy").
Those problems aside, "Jersey Girl" is sweet and funny and there are a few moments when Smith’s snarkier side makes a welcome appearance (such as the bored Catholic-school teacher who compliments a student for his "excellent droning").

Well, what is good about “Jersey Girl?” First, the youngster Raquel Castro is wonderful as Gertie, but the character is written with an adult voice that cheapens much of her character’s impact.
After watching tons of tiny zero budget films (several are mailed to us weekly), and talking with their writers and directors, Rusty White and I here at EI both have heard this technique referred to as a “montage” of sorts.
In “Jersey Girl,” Carlin is subdued and restrained and pretty darned good in the role as Ollie’s workingman father.

COVER GIRL is certainly not one of cinema’s best musicals or a high point in either Kelly or Hayworth’s careers, yet it’s still an entertaining outing that will make you tap your toes and yearn for romance.

Cover Girl, more than any film I can think of at this moment, bridges a time between women as homemakers, subservient to men in general, certainly not to work after marriage and the phase of near equality in which we find ourselves at present.
COVER GIRL was also a major turning point in the career of Gene Kelly, as it established him as a virtuoso choreographer as well as a major dancing talent, along with cementing Hayworth's reputation as Hollywood's most talented female dancer.

I really loved the film as a character piece in which the main point for me was to watch Hellboy and Abe do stuff and use their various gadgets.
To much of the subplot characters were underdeveloped to push the film into 10 and all-time great status, but it was a very fun summer popcorn type film.
Also, in contrasting Hellboy with Jersey Girl, I'm going to back Jersey Girl back down to a 7 instead of 8.

When I learned that Smith aimed to deviate from his norm with Jersey Girl, I was curiously optimistic to see what the new, ostensibly more mature version of the filmmaker would accomplish.
Jersey Girl proves, even with six features now under his belt, just how amateurish a filmmaker Kevin Smith still is and continues Ben Affleck's rapid descent from movie stardom.
evin Smith's new film, the Ben Affleck vehicle Jersey Girl, has a few things going for it—it's shot in focus, the picture and soundtrack are in perfect sync, and it means well.

What Jersey Girl lacks is the energy of his earlier films.
Smith's worst film and a major disappointment, but all in all not a crap movie.
Too bad, because it's got the best dialog in the film, and Smith shows great restraint in not following it up with another scene, which a lesser movie might have, that would make the ending less definitive.

Jersey Girl (2004) review by the Jackass Critics
I was incredibly pleased with this film, as it was funny enough and heartfelt enough to keep my attention for the entire duration of the film.
Jersey Girl has some truly funny lines, but the dialogue doesn't sound like Smith's usual dialogue, and that's not only because the typical scatological comedy isn’t here.
In an ironic twist, this is probably Smith’s most accessible film, and would make a good date movie, yet it’s the move that appears to fall the farthest from where his true talent lies.

 Film Blather: Jersey Girl
Jersey Girl, Smith's latest and probably finest film, finally uses his flair for sharp dialogue in a way that isn't gimmicky, showy and attention-grabbing.
Die-hard fans will probably decry Jersey Girl as the man's most "conventional" project, an act of "selling out" to Hollywood, but that's all nonsense: Smith has stopped thinking of himself as the most clever little boy on the block and started becoming a filmmaker.
The ending, most remarkable for what it doesn't do, proved to me that though Smith might by now be entrenched in the Hollywood machine, he is a filmmaker with his own voice and the freedom to go his own way.

Some might say Jersey Girl is a little sappy...and in my opinion it is. But it is an excellent date flick and even though we don't see Silent Bob, there is enough humor to help even the roughest and toughest of you enjoy it.
With Jersey Girl, Smith shows it was very easy for him to tell a family friendly story with a minimum of fart and drug jokes.

Others are pretty bad, including “Mallrats,&; “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and now “Jersey Girl.” All of them are suffused with Smith’s evident belief that he’s a sharp, witty observer of the world around him; actually, most of the time he seems to be examining his own navel with glad cries of discovery.
Lopez is in the film only very briefly, so she doesn’t keep coming back like the ghost of relationships past.
