Wheatley, Oxfordshire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wheatley village lies six miles east of Oxford, in Oxfordshire, UK, in a valley at right angles to the river Thame.
During the 13th century Wheatley was part of the property of the Abbey of Abingdon and in 1279 was described as a hamlet of Cuddesdon.
One of the main occupations for Wheatley people was stone quarrying and the stone was used for building Windsor Castle, Merton College, local cottages and ecclesiastical buildings, most of which were erected between the 13th and 18th centuries.

Wheatley, which considers itself to be a village, rather than a small town, is in south east Oxfordshire, near the border with Buckinghamshire.

On the east the parish boundary is the River Thame, whose water meadows are in strong contrast to Shotover Hill and the park of Shotover House, west of the village.

The principal tributaries joining the Thames on the Oxfordshire side do not in any case rise within the county, but have the greater part of their courses through it.
The western feeders of the Thames and Cherwell have much rich woodland in their narrow valleys, and the sequestered village of Great Tew, on a tributary of the Cherwell river, may be singled out as having a situation of exceptional beauty.
North-west of the last-named formation a broad outcrop of Oxford Clay crosses the county; while this is mostly under pasture, the next lower formation, the Cornbrash, a brownish rubbly limestone, gives rise to a loose brown soil very suitable for the cultivation of wheat.

Name Origins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
In the UK there are two towns still bearing the name of Wheatley (one near Oxford - thought to be the original town of that name, and the other in Hampshire, England), in addition to the villages of North Wheatley and South Wheatley, found in Nottinghamshire, England.
However, it is true that "de Wheatley" (of Wheatley) was in use from around the 12th century, and ascribed to some of those that came from the town of Wheatley in Oxfordshire, which was founded around 956 AD.
Other theories ascribe to the belief that most of the ancestry comes from a John Wheatland, who was a very wealthy land owner in Surrey.
