Talk about fish out of water, Wheatus, a band who wrote, played, arranged, produced and recorded every last note of their top 5 hit, suddenly found themselves rubbing shoulders with the nation’s favourite preening pop puppets.
Their first two singles ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ and ‘A little Respect’ (a cover of the Erasure number) saw them snuggling up to the higher reaches of the charts, while their self titled, and self produced debut album was met with critical acclaim and sales to match.
The Wheatus live experience started to grab people by the throats and soon the band gained a following of avid fans, known as The Frogs thanks to an off the cuff remark from Brendan that he would like a Frog for his birthday.

This party atmosphere was further enhanced by Brendan B. sharing shots and light-hearted disses throughout the show with friends and fans in the audience.
Wheatus still crafts engaging, high-energy pop melodies with Brown’s wry, sometimes ironic lyrics, but Brendan B’s nerdy persona has given way to a more mature, perhaps angrier version.
But what was evident the night of this show was that Wheatus was having a great time kicking off a stint in the cozy confines of the Luna as a de facto house band for a series of dates that lasts at least through the end of February (catch ‘em while you can).

It is however impressive that Wheatus were allowed to produce their debut album, quite a feat really considering they are signed to Columbia.
Poppy, catchy and ultimately irritating, Wheatus have churned out an album destined to sell due to that soaring single on the US charts.

Back in 2000, Brendan Brown and his band Wheatus were new kids on the block in the world of rock and pop.
Knowing just how hard it can be to make a noticeable splash with so many other established acts, Wheatus made the completely understandable decision to leverage their way into television and movies to maximize their exposure.
Given Wheatus' rocky relationship with Sony Records, it's not surprising to see this streak of angry rebellion on the album.

This song y'see is perfect Wheatus, it has the Pop undertones there especialy in the Chorus but its mainly Soft-Rock music, the big guitar sequences are there as ever, and Brendans voice is perfect for the track.
The storyline of the song?, well its obvious really isn't it?, we're hearing the tale of a 'geek' who falls for one of the top catches at his high school, only to see her going out with the football captain, she dumps the football captain for the geek but you knew that already didn't you?
It isn't too great a track, but once again its not a terrible track, its the kind of thing that your average music listener could easily relax into, but to listen to it, you do really have to be in the mood for it all.

To add some just-right flourishes to otherwise no-frills arrangements, Wheatus turned to Phil A. Jimenez, a multi-instrumentalist and engineer Brendan knew from around.
The power of the pop elements plus the story-telling and the social commentary was just something I really wanted to be a part of." Phil not only added percussion, harmonica, even a bit of banjo, he also co-produced Wheatus with the band.

Along with bassist Nic di Piero, keyboardist Michael Bellar and backing vocalist Kathryn Froggatt, their business is the creation of near-perfect pop that owes just as much to '70s monoliths like Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Queen and AC/DC as they do to indie their rock heroes, like Walt Mink.

It takes a different directtion from previous Wheatus fare, being heavier and rockin out more, but it works and is the best song on the album and probably in the top ten wheatus songs overall.

Splendid Magazine reviews Wheatus: Too Soon Monsoon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In addition to sporting a grainier sonic than the band's earlier records, Too Soon Monsoon marks an adjustment in perspective that's perfectly understandable for a one-hit wonder gone bust: instead of jabbing us with pointed nineties irony, this album pines for a more pleasant past.
We get another open letter to the giants of AOR in "In the Melody", a trifling lament for the days when rock used to value melody that mirrors Rush's "Spirit of the Radio" lyrically, musically and vocally.
As if the song's flimsy rhetoric don't hurt it enough (How do Wheatus account for the success of pop acts like The Shins and The New Pornographers if rock isn't melodic anymore?), Brendan Brown's cringe-worthy Geddy Lee impersonation might completely destroy his argument in its own right.
