Once you reach the ridgetop you have gained 99% of the elevation on your trek and the rest of the hike is along a line of peaks leading to Wheeler.
Wheeler Peak was named for Major George Montague Wheeler (1842-1905), who led the "United States Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian" from 1871-1879.
New Mexico's highpoint is located approximately 13 miles NE of historic Taos, in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness area of Carson National Forest.

Wheeler Peak is the highest mountain in New Mexico, but it is not a particularly spectacular or interesting peak.
Wheeler's summit is visible from the eastern reaches of the ski area, and the ski area road provides paved access to the usual trailhead for the peak.
La Cal basin, high on the north ridge of the peak, is a pretty alpine bowl, and to the north and east of Wheeler Peak its namesake wilderness offers solitude away from the state high-point peakbaggers often found making their way to the summit.

The best metaphor to use in climbing the slope to Wheeler Peak is that you shouldn’t attack the slope but negotiate with it instead and take what the slope offers you.
For the record the trail up the slope towards Wheeler Peak can be broken into three distinct parts: the lower part is the easiest section.

Once I crossed into New Mexico it was already dark and the road from Raton to Taos is quite desolate.
Wheeler Peak can finally be seen from the lake and the route gains the ridge on the left side of the photo below between Wheeler Peak and Mount Walter.

The study is evaluating the restoration of the species at Badlands by tracking the genetic makeup of the offspring, determining initial parasite loads of the introduced sheep, and identifying habitat use and movements of the new subpopulation.
A wide variety of federal agencies, 13 western state wildlife departments, and three organizations committed to the welfare of wild sheep will be able to use the results in restoring bighorn sheep to suitable habitat throughout their historical range.
