Wheelock is fifteen miles northeast of Bryan in south central Robertson County.
In 1833 the Wheelock family left their home in Illinois for Texas, and a year later the townsite was laid out.
By 1845 Wheelock was one of the best-known towns in Central Texas, partly because it was on the main stage and mail routes through the area.

John Wheelock had just married Maria Suhm (a daughter of Governor Christian Suhm of the Caribbean island of St. Thomas), and he very much wanted her name commemorated in the Vermont town's name.
Wheelock is thus the only town in Vermont ever to have been chartered to an organization wholly outside of the state.
As late as the mid-l800's the rentals paid by Wheelock tenants continued to provide a large percentage of the permanent funds for Dartmouth College, and some lands in the town still are held under long-term rentals from the college.

 Wheelock, Eleazar. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Here he became interested in Native American education, and he founded and conducted (1754–67) a school for Algonquin and Iroquois youth.
One of his first students, Samson Occom, went to England and helped to raise funds for the project, and when an endowment of some $50,000 had been collected, Wheelock moved to what is now Hanover, N.H., and established (1770) Dartmouth.
He became its first president and guided the college through the early days of the American Revolution.

When I picked up my copy of Wheelock years later to refresh my knowledge of Latin, I discovered just how valuable the instructors' input had been been, as I kept coming across questions of grammar, tense, declension, etc. that were not fully explained, or clearly explained, in Wheelock.
For a good eighty to ninety percent, the Wheelock explanations were sufficient, but for those who need a mastery of the language, eighty to ninety percent is not enough.

In 6th grade, we would leap into Wheelock's readings and start their little brains chewing on the Roman thoughts presented in the text.
This, to my mind, is one of the chief benefits of Wheelock -- that the exercises and readings are adapted from Roman authors and present Roman thoughts in Latin, not the thoughts of a modern textbook committee rendered in Latin.

In 2001, Colonel Wheelock assumed duties as the Crew Support Astronaut for the ISS Expedition 2 crew, which was on orbit for 147 days from March 2001 to August 2001, and for the ISS Expedition 4 crew, which was on orbit for 195 days (U.S. long-duration record) from December 2001 to June 2002.
Colonel Wheelock is the primary liaison between Star City and NASA operations in Houston, including medical, training, science, contracting, public affairs, and administration departments.

This site contains a series of drill programmes which are intended to assist students of Latin (particulary those using Wheelock's text) with their vocabulary.
There are a number of programmes to choose from including: Flash Cards, Click On Words, Fill-In-The-Blanks (used for meanings, cases and principle parts), a growing Database of Wheelock's vocabulary (used for listing vocabulary by type or by chapter which also will decline nouns on-the-fly), a searchable Latin/English English/Latin lexicon.
Credits: the vocabulary coincides with R.A. LaFleur's 5th edition of Wheelock's Latin, published by Harper Perennial, 1995.
