Topic: Wheeze

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  Word! Wheeze
A wheeze is the whistling sound air makes when your breathing tubes are narrowed.
This is what happens during an asthma flare-up.
Sometimes you can hear someone wheeze, but usually a doctor needs to listen to a person's lungs with a stethoscope to hear wheezing.

 Auscultation - Wheeze
Particularly in early childhood, wheezing is often associated with a lower respiratory tract infection or bronchiolitis.
Wheezing that begins in the first weeks or months of life, or that which is persistent despite bronchodilator therapy, is unlikely to be reactive airway disease or asthma and should be more thoroughly investigated.
Wheezing may not be noted during quiet breathing, and forced expiration may be necessary to elicit it.

Current wheeze (in the last 12 months) and currently diagnosed asthma (CDA) [ie, current wheeze and ever-diagnosed asthmatic subject] were recorded at 10 years of age when BHR was measured at bronchial challenge.
The increasingly common occurrence of childhood wheeze and asthma, (1-3) particularly in affluent westernized society, (4) is well-documented.
A whole-population birth cohort was established on the Isle of Wight in 1989 to prospectively study the natural history of childhood wheezing and to identify risk factors for the development of childhood wheezing and asthma.

Asthma UK - New approach needed for treating wheeze
Wheezing in children aged 1–5 years can occur particularly after having a cold or flu-type virus, and is known to doctors as 'viral wheeze'.
Currently, parents of under-sixes may be given steroid tablets to administer to their children at the first signs of viral wheeze, depending on the child's previous pattern of illness.
Parents of half of the group were given steroid tablets called prednisolone to give to their children at the onset of wheeze, while the other half received a placebo, or dummy pill.

Inhaled steroids for episodic viral wheeze of childhood
A wheeze that is recurrent and caused by a viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is different to asthma.
Episodic recurrent wheezing happens in children who have no symptoms in between episodes and is different to wheezing that is persistent.
Recurrent episodic wheeze in association with viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is a specific clinical illness distinct from persistent atopic asthma.

We conducted a study to evaluate automatic computerized wheeze detection (CWD) in determining BHR in young infants with prolonged cough, and its correlation with the subsequent development of wheezing.
Therefore, the detection of wheezing has been suggested as an alternative end point to BPT (ie, provocative concentration of a substauce causing wheeze [PCwheeze]) in young children.
This study describes the use of automatic wheeze detection in BPT studies in young infants with prolonged cough and correlates the results with a 3-year clinical follow-up.

Home Endotoxin Exposure and Wheeze in Infants: Correction for Bias Due to Exposure Measurement Error
We now reexamine the relationship between endotoxin exposure and wheeze under the assumption that the level of airborne endotoxin in the home is the exposure of interest and that the amount of endotoxin in household dust is a surrogate for this exposure.
Exposure to endotoxin is associated with increased risk of nonatopic wheeze and with reduced prevalence of inhalant allergy, eczema, and atopic wheezing.
One implication of finding a much stronger association of wheeze with airborne endotoxin than with dust endotoxin in the family room is that it is reasonable to assume that airborne endotoxin measured over 1.5 days is a more direct measure of exposure than is dust endotoxin.

Asthma Drug Singulair Soothes RSV-Related Wheeze, Cough in Babies
Researchers say many infants who are hospitalized with RSV continue to suffer from wheeze and other asthma-like symptoms long after they are discharged.
But researchers do know that during serious RSV cases infants release substances known as leukotrienes in the lungs, which are thought to contribute to the dangerous inflammation that occurs.
In addition, a worsening of symptoms requiring withdrawal from the study or hospitalization occurred in only four of the infants on Singulair versus 10 of those on the placebo, and these exacerbations were significantly delayed in the treated infants.

According to a new study, as far as asthmatics are concerned, just the mention of words such as "wheeze" can activate an attack.
Richard Davidson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and colleagues, say their findings could explain why asthma attacks in response to allergens, can worsen during stressful times.
In the study, patients with asthma were given ragweed or dust-mite extracts to inhale and then heard three different types of asthma-related words, such as "wheeze", non-asthma negative terms such as "loneliness", and neutral words such as "curtains".
