Whernside - one of Yorkshire's famous Three Peaks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
At 2,414 ft, Whernside is the highest of the Yorkshire Dales' famous "Three Peaks".
Although many think Whernside to be visually less interesting than its distinctive neighbours Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent, the summit of this fell offers some spectacular views.
Like its neighbours, Whernside is capped by millstone grit on top of limestone - a geological profile which gives rise to a network of caves and potholes formed by waters draining off the upper slopes.

Until fairly recently, I wasn't even sure of the location of Whernside (I'd also thought it was called 'Great Whernside', but that's an entirely different hill elsewhere in Yorkshire), the tallest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks at 736 m (2415').
This meant that apart from a lunch stop huddled against a wall, we didn't pause on the summit itself, and had no views of the surrounding area.
I'd been particularly hoping to identify familiar points from the top of Whernside so I'd subsequently be able to spot the relatively anonymous profile of Whernside from elsewhere.
