Wherry considered his most significant contribution to geology-mineralogy to be his demonstration in 1917 that certain bentonitic clay beds in the Pierre Shale were derived from widespread volcanic ash, thereby accounting for their continuity and their value as horizon markers - a new concept at the time.
Wherry's interest in the box huckleberry eventually came to the attention of Dr. Frederick Coville of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the botanist and horticulturist primarily responsible for developing the present large-fruited commercial blueberry from its parent, the native highbush blueberry.
Wherry's vast knowledge of the native plants of Pennsylvania, and their distribution, was utilized in the compilation of a voluminous monograph, work that went on for some 40 years.

It was winched up again using a pulley block on the forestay but to make it easier the bottom of the mast was fitted with a massive counter weight which swung down through a trough in the foredeck until it slotted into the base of the mast box.

Don Wherry, gifted composer, percussionist, builder of unusual musical instruments, and visual artist, died Saturday night of a heart attack while leading several hundred people in a parade during the inaugural Victoria Park Lantern Festival.
Among his numerous compositions, Wherry co-composed a special harbour symphony called Growlers and Ballycatters, with Paul Steffler for the Museum of Archeology and History in Montreal in 1995, and a year later he composed a harbour symphony for San Francisco's Sound Culture festival.

Flounder Bay Boat Lumber has complete "builder's kits" of the Cosine Wherry, including all cedar strips, hardware, fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin for $1725 (as of 10/2002).
Their introduction proclaiming the Wherry to be "light, an easy rower, stable, tough and capable of handling plenty of passengers and gear" convinced me that this was the boat for me. It met all of my requirements, especially in the fact that it was light and can be cartopped.
I prefer the epoxy for the reason that you do not have to seal the cedar before applying it; unlike using the polyester resins that will not adhere to the cedar because of the natural oil in the wood.
