Whin Sill grassland habitat action plan
Whin grassland occurs on skeletal soils developed on outcrops of the Whin Sill and on associated dykes.
The habitat is mainly of botanical interest, although outcrops of the Whin Sill in north Northumberland formerly supported populations of the Durham argus butterfly (the northern English race salmacis of the northern brown argus: Aricia artaxerxes) in association with its larval food plant, common rock-rose Helianthemum nummularium.
Whin grassland at this SSSI was to be quarried under an old permission, and turf with some 3,000 Alchemilla micans plants was translocated in 2001to another part of the quarry, so far successfully.

WHIN - Report on the Meeting of Experts
Was the WHIN a democratizing "ground-up" approach, in which the role of the Centre gradually faded as the States Parties and Sites assumed greater capacity, as implied by principles 3 and 6, or should its structure be more centralized, with the Centre and Advisory Bodies providing the core information (principle 1)?
The issue of the capacity of less-developed States to participate in the WHIN was also discussed (Principle 7).
Subsequent to the meeting, a phased development plan to establish the WHIN within one year from the Committee's December meeting was proposed (See Annex 4).

North Pennines AONB - Permo-Carboniferous Intrusive Rocks (Whin Sill)
The Great Whin Sill may be regarded as one of the key natural heritage features of the North Pennine AONB.
The recognition of its true intrusive igneous origin, in the 19th century, quickly led to the term 'sill' being adopted by geological science throughout the world for all concordant horizontal intrusive bodies of this sort.
The overall form of the component members of the suite of intrusions, dated at 295 million years, and their relationships to the surrounding rocks, including a unique xenolithic raft of roof rock, are strikingly exposed across large parts of the AONB.

The Great Whin Sill, 1817   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
One of the most notable occurences of whinstone in the British Isles is the Great Whin Sill, which runs through Northumberland, just south of Scotland.
At places it is over 200 feet thick, and where it protrudes above the surface it can be quite a formidable structure.
Arguing that the Sill was a volcanic intrusion would have been difficult to do in 1817, since it would have required explaining where so much molten rock had come from, and Winch does not go that far in his paper on the geology of Northumberland.
