Whip (politics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In politics, a whip is a member of a political party in a legislature whose task is to ensure that members of the party attend and vote as the party leadership desires.
In both houses the Minority Whip is the second highest-ranking individual in the minority party (the party with the lesser number of legislators in a legislative body), outranked only by the Minority Leader.
In the Senate the Government Whip is Senator Jeannie Ferris and the Opposition Whip is Senator George Campbell.

Chief Whip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In British politics, when his or her party is in government the Chief Whip in the House of Commons is usually appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury so the incumbent (representing the whips in general) has a seat and a voice in Cabinet.
The Government Chief Whip in the House of Commons is assisted by the Deputy Chief Whip, Whips, and Assistant Whips.
The Deputy Chief Whip is Treasurer of HM (Her Majesty's) Household, the next two Whips are Comptroller of HM Household and Vice-Chamberlain of HM Household, and the remaining Whips are Lords Commissioners of the Treasury.

The whip is the quintessential insider's job, the leader assigned to line up votes on legislation, a particularly tough job for the minority party.
But Pelosi's whip count was so precise and she was so certain the amendment would lose, her staff confirms she allowed several Democrats to vote for the amendment to spare them the political grief of snubbing the NRA.
While her counterpart, House Republican Whip Tom DeLay of Texas, is known as "the Hammer," a disciplinarian who threatens his Republicans with loss of committee assignments and chairmanships if they fail to toe the party line, Pelosi is still the polished hostess from Pacific Heights.

Pelosi as House Whip Ends Politics as Usual
She is the first woman to rise through the political ranks to a top leadership role in Congress.
The whips are major players in the Congressional caucuses of each party, they weigh in on which bills hit the floor, on who takes a leading role in floor debates and on how far to take the backroom negotiations which lead to front-page headlines.
The minority whip is especially concerned with making sure that the rules and procedures that are used to debate each piece of legislation are fair and that different points of view can be expressed.

Alone in their bunker, they were not about to give up this fantasy, especially for politics as usual, which would reduce them to being mere congressmen among hundreds trudging through the problematical, complex tasks of cutting deals to gain appropriations for local interests and servicing the incessant needs of constituents.
Through the political machine he had constructed and controlled -- the engine of the GOP in the House, linking the party's constituency groups, corporate interests, campaign contributions, and dominance over the committee structure -- he whipped the Republicans into line, with threats if he had to.
He had opposed him for whip in 1989, and with the Republican capture of the Congress in 1994 and Gingrich's elevation to Speaker, he had clawed his way into the post.

Most Republicans are reticent about talking politics, whereas Democrats tend to live up to the feisty "donkey" attitude and proselytize on politics as though it were a religion.
They probably thought they were staying away from trouble by banning political expression from the plant, and their risk-avoidance backfired.
Granted, there are some political activists who use "wedge issues" such as abortion in a way that casts doubt on their sincerity.
