Topic: Whip Smart

And when she released "Whip Smart" in 1994, I caught a couple of videos on MTV for that album's singles, "Supernova" and "Whip Smart", but I was unimpressed and felt no compulsion to listen to the rest of the album.
Ironically, it was "Whip Smart" the single which somehow got caught in my head two years later and led me to purchase "Whip Smart" the album.
It was a departure from her "Exile" sound, but not an abandonment; a natural growth that showed that Phair wasn't just a one-season wonder.) After about a month of listening to "Whip Smart" and nothing else, I bought "Exile" and gorged myself on that for a while.

Whip Smart is not a clone of Exile.
Whip Smart is Phair's second album after her debut "Exile in Guyville".
While "Exile" is known for it's sexual topics and bare honesty, "Whip Smart" takes a different turn overall, producing a large number of pop ready songs while maintaining a healthy dose of libido.

I mean, c'mon, she's a master of hype anyways, and the decision was probably so natural she made it in a whiplash second.
Instead of glossing over the rough spots, it does wonders for showing off the ramshackle smarts of her arrangements.
What made Guyville so sexy wasn't all the explicit language--it was the matter-of-factness of her frankness.

Exile in Guyville is considered her masterpiece, and i think it's a great album but for me, whip-smart is her masterpiece.
Totally under-rated, this album has smart lyrics and great guitar playing.
You can decide for yourself but Whip-smart is one cd that will never be used as a coaster.

Notable among the cliches wherein the word *smart* occurs is "smart as a whip," which suggests that the person or child so characterized either presently or in the future occupies, or will, a hierarchically superior position wherefrom the infliction of pain upon those Inferior to him/her may in the Nature Of Things occur.
(b) Smartness is distributed Normally, like other measured continuous varia- bles in human populations; i.e., the Bell-Shaped Curve; and we are pretty damned certain that height is genetically determined; consequently, so is Smartness.
All organisms construing themselves Smart will, in the crunch, or even without any crunch, crave, desire, or intend that their *own* children shall enjoy "all the advantages." Because the hereditary transmission of social rank (or status, a five- letter Latin word for the four-letter English word, rank) *is what children are for*.
